Title: I have, with absolute certainty found a cure for
Post by catlind on May 26th, 2009 at 12:47pm
C...................

onstipation - bet ya thought I was gonna say clusters :P

Well, all folks that are from the mountains can have a good laugh at me, I'm doing it myself right now.  Of course I had a shower first...

Let me explain - the main road that leads off the mountain we live on is a curvy relatively narrow road with NO shoulders, and either mountain face or cliff drop to the side of you;  It was on that road, Longs Chapel, that I rolled the van.  Well, there's a bridge at the end, and it is currently under repairs so the ONLY direct route off the mountain is now detoured to one of two very long winding circuitous routes.

Now, the secondary roads, while offering breathtaking vistas, are even more winding (probably not a stretch on any of the 3 roads you have to take to get off the mountain that is straight for more than 200 feet) and narrower than the main route.  Again, there is NO shoulder, that white line is the end of the road.

I was returning home after running some errands, and I tend to be extremely cautious since rolling my van back in October, so I was doing less than the speed limit of 45 mph (which in my opinion is an insane speed for that road...) when I approached one of the multitude of blind snake back winding curves....

To come face to face with a !$^%@%&@$%@ 18 wheeler flatbed taking the curve at 45 mph, and over the yellow center line.  I slammed on the brakes, and sat there waiting for my annihilation;  fortunately, the truck missed me by about 6 inches, and the car behind me was able to stop with about 6 inches to spare as well.  I done shat myself.  Instant cure for constipation.  I think the lady in the suv behind me shat herself too.....

I grew up on the flat farmlands running along the St. Clair river and great lakes....this mountain business is for the birds! literally!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go clean my van.... :o :-?

There once was a woman named Cat.....
who sat in her car as she shat.......
it wasn't her choice
on the windy road she was poised
at a truck facing her .......
now how's THAT!????

LOL! Apologies from the Author..... but, my LAWD, woman! Those roads are going to make you a babbling mindless lump of ...err..sumpin!!
I think Clark should transfer to a nice flat state.....with straight roads!!

That said, am I ever glad you got out of this one unscathed........shall I send you some more Febreze???

Cathi :D

Glad you are OK.  At the peril of being shot, "I had one of those once!" ;D

Most 18 wheelers show more sense than that, but there are those few who make the rest look bad.

Here's a link to our excursion up to Mt Mitchell, you can see what the main roads are like in some of them... that was another trip that had the Blueridge Pkwy under construction, so we had to take a detour....those pics aren't up because they were taken from a moving vehicle, one does not stop to take pictures on secondary mountain roads.

Beautiful views, I was an absolute mental wreck by the time the trip was done though hehe.

Cathi, I loved it;  Jerry, no shooting to come, I use truckers as my gauge when traveling in inclement weather -  never pass a trucker when there's bad weather, they know what they are doing;  Carolyn, you may want to get 2 boxes it was a really big truck :P

This state hates me....and it's all Chuck's fault.

Jerry

and when we do the people behind us get pissed cuz we're going to slow. it also pisses em off when we cut off the left lane to give the guy on the right shoulder some room the change his tire or creep through small towns on a warm sunny day when small children are out playing.

the guy in the 18 wheeler was going waaaay to fast for a switchback road with no shoulders. i've been on roads like that grossing 79000#s with a 48' spread axle flatbed, and had my steer tires in the gravel on the right side and my trailer tires in the gravel on the left at 10mph. if im going slow it gives everybody more time to react. i don't care about the angry people behind me as long as i don't kill anybody. allot of truck drivers nowadays lack basic courtesy skills and common sense.  :-/

I'm bummed...I can't see what you put up Mel :(

Dennis, if I hired a driver I'd be a basket case, I've seen how the locals drive, case in point, the driver of the truck :P
We used to live in a nice flat straight road state....I never thought I'd see the day I said I longed for the roads of Omaha of Nebraska LOL.

Johnny, you are 100% right;  case in point, the tractor trailer that delivered our household goods nearly jack knifed 3 times just trying to get on our secondary road from the main road.  And the truck I met was on a secondary road, fortunately with an empty load.  I'm a fast reactive driver, but in those circumstances the only reaction you HAVE is stop and pray (and shit yerself) ;)

Truckers have saved my road weary tail more often than they've ever annoyed me;  even down to being annoyed because they were slow and I was in a hurry and lo and behold up ahead was a cop.  Probably saved me tons of money as well as my life in inclement weather on many many many occasions that I've traveled the interstate and 400 series highways.  I don't know how you guys do it....Iowa and Illinois about kill me.  Then there's misery....but the worst, and I do mean the worst, as in see to the curve of the earth flat, is Saskatchewan - at least for all the places I've traveled hehe.

I had errands to run today...but didn't want to leave the mountain until I'd eaten a few bricks of cheese ;)

I loved driving Saskatchewan!  That is one of the prettiest provinces in my estimation.  (I like open country)  Also, the people there are some of the friendliest and most helpful I ever encountered while driving.

Give it a little time, and you'll never want to leave the mountains.  I know it is still a little scary, but after a while you will be driving like (as) "one of the locals."  :D

<Note to self:  If EVER riding in a vehicle, with Cat driving, make sure to bring SEVERAL clean pairs of panties ... (Preferably, the dark colored ones ... They don't show the dark staining as much)>

HEY!!!  It ain't MY fault!!!  I tried to keep you OUT of our fair state!  YOU had to come barging in!  Now you are trying to run all the locals off the road!

But then again, I guess we have to give you a little leeway ... After all, you are a mere female ....

(Time to go hide from the infamous 2X4 ... )
