You used to smoke inside your house and now you want to get rid of the smell?
Good luck. U gotta wash the walls and ceiling with amonia or something to cut the nicotine. Shampooing the carpet may get some of the smell out, probably have to replace it. U need to have all the furniture cleaned or replaced. That smoke is ALL over the house.....everywhere. |

I can't add any hope either. It seems impossible but I wanted to tell you CONGRATULATIONS on being smoke free for 3 weeks!!!!!! Keep up the good work. Time to do some decorating and carpet shopping.

I guess I will have to live with it for a while then. In a couple years we will be moving to Missouri. I will just wait until right before we sell then put in new carpet and paint the place all at once.
Until then I guess it is FEBREZE and candles I will wait for new furniture for the new place. Gena |

Not sure if this will be of any help, Gina, but......
I have a craft room and put on workshops, classes, stamp camps, etc. and had a real problem with the girls coming over to my smoking house. So I did some homework and ended up getting an ozone generator. - it's a crystal air pro 700. I gave the house a shock treatment of one hour on high (no one in the house) and then have it on low for a couple of hours whenever I smoke. The girls say they'd never know I smoked in the house now. Might be an option for you. Gayle H |

I'm with Gayle... the ozone thingy works. I had one for years. They're expensive, but they DO work. Takes ALL odors out of the air (even perfume).
And it will keep your A/c duct clean. Damnest thing I ever saw. Hugs BD :-* |

New paint on the walls and ceiling, launder the curtains with Arm & Hammer detergent 2-3 times, use a shampooer for the upholstery.

As long as noone is continuing to smoke in the house, the smell will fade. You can't tell that there used to be a smoker (2 for that matter) in this houseIt does take awhile. Your carpet probably is holding the most odor, so sprinkle baking soda on it, let it sit and then vacuum (several times). If you have curtains, either wash them in baking soda or vinegar or have them dry cleaned.

Great job on staying smoke free!
When you go to paint I strongly recommend you prime first with either Kilz (use the real stuff, not the Kilz 2 or the low odor. CAUTION it might trigger a hit. It does for me unless I use a respirator which is a good idea with the kind of area you need to cover) or Park's Sealer Primer (shellac base). If you don't prime first with a sealer the nicotene will bleed through your new paint and it won't look even, and will look dull. Jerry |

Hi Gena,
Before you paint, prime with a good oil based primer. This will cover any stains too. Have a good strong fan blowing out of a window in the room, it will knock you for a loop from the fumes. Then paint over it, you can use latex paint over oil primer. The paint job will easily last a couple years, and will take the smoke smell out. Last fall, I washed the windows, use a squeegee, with mild detergent. Take a rag and wash, then squeegee it off. Makes it very easy. And you'll be pleasantly surprised at the amount of light that comes in. One thing I noticed was the discoloration of the window frames, I wiped them down, and they turned white again... it was from the smoke. Basically, wash everything you can. Laundry, just put in a half a cup of baking soda with the detergent, works great. I bought some de-oderizing spray from work, it's called Dry Air Odor Eliminator by Sprayway. They use this in hotels. Cover your TV and computer, and spray in a wide arc. I used it in my bedroom, and it worked to get the smoke odor out. Keep the windows open, it has a strong chemical odor at first, but works great. And there is no after-smell. Baking soda in your carpet will help. One thing my neighbor used to do is take pie plates, and put a few pieces of charcoal in them and strategically place them around the house. You never knew they smoked. Then, by the time you move, if you don't clean the carpet, you'll never know the house was smoked in. Good luck with your move! |

Yup, yup...all of that, AND
Move as MUCH air through that house as you possibly can! Open windows whenever possible, was all wahables that are in the vicinity, and, by all means, look for the telltale signs around and on windows-and in corners! Kilz, then Paint.......and when you're all done, sit back, enjoy and be soo glad you'll never smoke again! Wishing you the best for your move, Cathi |
