Title: Road Trip To NYC, Then Onto Toronto...
Post by B14CK5H33P on Jun 12th, 2009 at 5:38pm
After never having had a 'real' vacation, I am taking a road trip with my best friend and are going through IN, OH and PA to spend 2 1/2 days smelling NYC (never been to the big apple), then we are going to Niagara Falls, and on up to Toronto, Canada.

Right now I am both excited as all get out and a tad nervous, since I don't always travel well, not to mention my first time out of the country. While NYC will be meeting a fellow dj from WBRN, and once we make it to Canada, will be getting in touch with Iddy.

I noticed he lives in Toronto and so I messaged him. He's never met another CHead, so am looking forward to meeting him.

On our way back, we are stopping in Ann Arbor for a night or two and I'll be visiting my old best friend up there, plus try to look up my old boss. Then we are coming down to Normal, IL for a drum & bugle core presentation, back to home.

I am so excited to get away from here for awhile. Things have been pretty screwed up lately, and to be able to just escape is nothing short of a miracle. At the same time, I am getting ready to send off my registration for the convention with a guest. What is beyond cool is that I was willing to travel wherever the convention was going to be this year - and it is coming to St Louis!  So, that made it even easier to make this trip possible.

So, look out New York and Canada. Here I Come!  8-)

Sounds like a great trip, Carl. The Falls are just unbelievable and the people in Canada are wonderful.
Don't forget your passport. Canada is no longer part of the U.S.

Carl - if you get to Toronto - send me a PM and maybe I could scoot in and meet up with you and Iddy.  I'm only about 45 minutes outside of Toronto.

Let me know.

When are you going Carl?

It would be lovely if it was while we were going to be in NY next month!

You're gonna have fun Carl. I wish I were going where you'll be. I want to see NY again and I haven't been to the Falls in years either.

Bob's right about a passport. You need that or what we call an "enhanced" drivers license now.

I'll still see you at the  convention tho.

Anyhoo, just checking in for a minute. Jeff bought a 'web book' - like 1/2 the size of a laptop, for us to use on the road.

On da road again... just can't wait to get on the road again....

We're getting ready to leave Pittsburg, PA. fun town to get lost in late at night when the roads are all screwed up.  Heading to Bushkill, PA until the 18th (outside of NY), then niagra falls on the 18th, then we will be in toronto one day, but am staying in Collingwood the rest of the trip (this is being dictated to me, I'm just typing, lol)

Anyone near Bushkill, PA... lemme know. We're getting ready to head there.

Carl - whose confoosed and head hurts from trying to tink and read the directions maps  :P

P.S.  Hope to meet Grandma and Iddy and anybody else who is willing to meet up.

P.P.S. anyone who wants my cell number just message me and I'll get it to them when we make it there,  but gotta pack this up.
Jeff got an Acer "webbook" that is like a mini laptop. I hate typing on this thingy!

So far, this has been one amazing trip! I've seen some beautiful sites, and had some wonderous (and some not so wonderous) experiences already. This is our last night in the Villa in the upper tip of PA, then we head out in the morning to Niagra Falls, then onto Ontario (or just outside of it anyways.)  The beast has only bashed my head a couple of times with whallopers, but mostly just shadowing. It's me leg and back killing me - not liking the changes in atmosphere & climate I guess. I have to say - I'll miss the villa. This is an awesome place.

Yesterday we went to NYC!!!  I have always dreamed of going to NYC and now that I've been, I'm over it, lol. No really, it was breath-taking (literally with the smog) and I had a major anxiety attack at one point due to sensory overload, but survived.
Riding the Staten Island Ferry to NYC was awesome, looking at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Jersey all at once, but what was beyond the coolest was standing in Times Square! I saw Broadway. I saw Radio City Music Hall. I saw things I never dreamt I'd actually see - though we missed the naked cowboy. I DID get my pic taken with Morgan Freeman. saw NBC studios and the 'Today Show' window...

...but out of everything I saw, nothing was as stirring as actually being at ground zero. Seeing the buildings that were effected by Sept 11th and still show some wounds, and also got to see some of the artwork sculpted from actual scrap metal from what remained at ground zero. We were told that the building to fall hardest sunk down 13 floors. I saw the memorials for the firemen and police who lost their lives that day, as well as tributes to those killed. We also got to go through the catwalk to see what is being built right now to replace one of the buildings. It was something I feel very honored to have seen with my own eyes. I was told of a bicycle that was chained to a signpost where a man ran into the WTC to drop off a package. We were standing right next to the same post. The man never made it back to his bicycle - but as a memorial the bike remained there several years, and he said almost every other week there'd be a whole new set of flowers, pictures, cards...   for months signs hang on buildings and street poles with "Have you seen my husband?" and such, it was a long time before people could bring themselves to take these things down.

If you can find a pic of the "Charles Atlas" made out of scrap metal as a 9/11 tribute online, check it out. I took a pic of it, since I forgot to bring the camera charger like a doofus, will have to get a disposable camera, as we still have more to go.. and hope to meet up with Iddy and GSB.

Been an inspiring trip indeed as a much needed getaway. I'll hate having to go back home, but look forward to next month in St Louis.  ;)

Peace,
Carl D

You will really like the Collingwood area.  Lots of water - the Blue Mountains - kind of touristy especially at this time of year.  Sadlyyou will miss the Elvis Festival!!! ;)

I hope you're enjoying your trip.

Hi Carl, sounds like your having a great road trip!

In another life, way back in the mid-eighties I worked in the money markets. Foreign currency broker. Spent a week working in the New York office,World Trade Centre. Don't remember what floor or building but I do remember taking the subway into the under ground of the Trade Centres and then the elevator rides way up.

It made those images of Sept 11 strike close to my heart. :( Some of the people I worked with were lost on that day.

Gone but not forgotten.

I hope the site soothes the souls of all those affected by what occured.

Don't mean to be a downer on your voyage, just brought back memories.

Iddy

Sorry to hear that Iddy. I remember watching it on TV as it happened, but to actually see the site in person, the names of those lost... it was a little more than I expected to be honest - though I knew it'd be emotional.

Canada is beautiful, and Niagra Falls - WOW!!!! We have a room overlooking the falls and can see both sides of it from here - both US and Canada.
We leave sometime tomorrow for Collingwood. Jeff wants to hit the waterpark in the morning, which means I gotta be hitting the sheets and prepare for another big day.

My Net10 phone doesn't work here, but my sprint better. If not, will call ya from wherever it is we're staying, Iddy. In any case, we'll meet up. Gma Sweet Boy - how do I get ahold of you? Lemme know.

Peace & Colourful waterfalls,
Carl D

We have arrived in Collingwood, and have settled into our nest here at the Cranberry Resort.
This place IS Beautiful! So far this has been one incredible trip, and still got a week to go. On the way back we are stopping in Ann Arbor, MI for a night, then to Chicago, then to a bugle & drum corps show.

Carol, got your number. Will be calling you and Iddy very soon (if not tonight, then tomorrow - just let me know how late is too late to call.) We are headed into town to get dinner and some supplies, and if it isn't too late will call when we get back. If it is too late, then I'll call tomorrow.

Would be great if we can all get together at the same time. Just have to figure out which day is best for y'all - saturday or sunday. Let me know and like I said, also let me know how late is too late to call.

That'll be icing on the cake: getting to meet two more clusterheads for the first time. I know Iddy hasn't met one, and not sure if Carol has but, it is always exciting for me to meet members of this family.

Gotta run. Food calls,
Carl

Not a problem Carol. We're here til the 24th, so if you're ableto get together another time that would be great. I forgot this is Father's day weekend, and was just thinking the weekend would be easiest to get together. If unable to meet up though I understand all too well.

I do hope to meet up with Iddy (tried to call this evening... check yer PM's).

Anyone else in the Toronto / Collingwood area that would like to meet up just drop me a line. Also going to Ann Arbor, MI and Chicagoon the way back - which we should arrive home I believe the 27th. We left on the 12th. Man, talk about a literal TRIP!  It's been a blast though.

Hope to catch you another time Grandma.

Peace,
Carl D

So far this has been one incredibly awesome trip. We're leaving for Ann Arbor on wednesday and will be there for only one night.
Looking forward to it, as I got ahold of my best friend from Milan back when I lived in Michigan working for the music distribution company. I haven't seen him since November 1995, so am really excited we get to meet up. .

The only thing that could even come close to how awesome this vacation has been is next months convention in St Louis. REALLY looking forward to that.

We had no problems coming into Canada. I just wonder how hard it would be to smuggle some midgets in my suitcase :D

Peace & Love,
Carl

Ah.... We actually passed through Columbus Ohio on our way to Pittsburg. Wish I could've met up with ya again. And thanks Sanna, we only have 3 more stops before it's all over (This went by WAAAAY too fast  :'( )

I can't fret though... I've had a blast! Yesterday I got to meet Iddy and his sis, and all I can say is he is one helluva nice guy. Very hospitable. My only regret was we couldn't stay longer - thanks to highway 400 being backed up and setting us back over an hour. Yes, I did get a bit verklempt when I left, but am glad we got to meet.

We leave Canada this morning, headed to Ann Arbor for a flash-through, then onto Chicago the next day, then Normal, IL for a Drum & Bugle show, then... home sweet home.

A bit homesick only for one reason: I miss my Zombie. *snif*
I can't wait to see my baby. I was told he has been 'depressed' (i.e. - just laying around, mostly hanging out in his cage, lack of appetite, etc.)  I guess he really is a one-owner dog, but I am lucky to be that owner.

Anyway, off to finish packing & make like a baby and head out.  ;)

Peace,
Carl D

PS - Thanks for the tunes Johnny

Like Carl said it was too brief a visit but non the less it was wonderful.

Like you all say....given the opportunity meet a fellow ClusterHead!

It certainly warmed my heart and I look forward to meeting more of you.

One happy Iddy :) :)

I'm just honored to be the first Chead you met.  Now you have to meet up with Grandma Sweet Boy. I wish we could've all met up together... I wish even more we could get you down to the U.S. to make it to the St Louis, MO convention next month.

Also, remember to check into the 25 lpm regulator. Like I said, makes a world of difference in how quick it aborts.

We're in Chicago tonight, and tomorrow night is the Drum & Bugle show in Normal, IL - then home. I'm homesick, but sad these two weeks went by so damn fast. I have lots of great memories to take home with me, and meeting you, Michele and Calvin was definitely a highlight.

Peace,
Carl

Last night of the trip. Getting ready to go to dinner, then on to a drum & bugle marching band performance. Tomorrow, we go home.

Sad that this trip has flown by so quick, but can't wait to see my lil buddy Zombie. I know he misses his daddy, and will probably rip me to shreds in glee when I walk in the door to pick him up.

I'm also anxious to get back to my music. MUCH inspiration has come from the past two weeks, and am REALLY anxious to hit that'record' button.

Gotta run,
Carl

PS- Wish I could've met up with ya Kevin.

The trip has come to an end, and I am back home in the hood. I knew when we were about to hit Granite City when the air quality started getting really bad. After having lots of fresh air, and only having to use 4 1/2 H tanks and 9 Frova tabs in 16 days. Now I am curious to see if I start getting hit like mad. I've known I need out of this town for a long time, and after being in some very clean air a long period - and some very smoggy air for 2 seperate nights, this should prove or disprove my theory as to the hydrocarbon factory adding to the factor of the number of CH's I am getting. (Now THAT was a long sentence.)

What an adventurous Journey I had, and while I had many moments that took my breath away just to see some beautiful sites and all of the new experiences being in a forgein land where their money looks funkier than ours, there were downsides too.

Brew wrote on Jun 26th, 2009 at 6:15pm:
Carl - I'll bet two weeks in a car did you a world of good. Not. ;)

It was indeed a bumpy road trip. Luckily Jeff had it mapped out so we didn't drive more than 6 hours to any single destination and there were times we had to pull over to rest stops so I could get out and just walk off cramping in my back and leg, but we kept on course on time. One thing that helped was the heated seat with lumbar support.
It was well worth it though. I had a REAL vacation, a getaway, and brought back memories and images I will cherish all my life.

The only travels I've had before this were all work, work, work back when I was with an independent music dist. company in '94 & '95. One of those festival road trips running music booths nearly cost me my life and did end someone elses, which left me with PTSD.
June '95 on the Ohio turnpike 88 mile post, the car my boss was driving overheated, so he pulled up under the overpass in the shade, well off the road. We had our belongings, fixtures & registers, and loaded it with CD's & Cassettes, and our change for the event; meanwhile I was following him in the green Chevy van FILLED front to back with CD's & Tapes for another event that was being dropped off at the event we were vending to take to another event at the same time.

I pulled over and he took the van to get antifreeze & water, and I stayed behind to watch the camper trailer. I tried to get in to grab some industry updates we just got since I knew I'd be there awhile, but couldn't get the door open (I could always pop the lock, but for some odd reason couldn't that day.)
I laid down on the retainer wall next to the camper and laid my smokes and soda right behind my head so I could reach them without getting up. I was there maybe two minutes when a guy who had just got on the turnpike started drifting off the shoulder numerous times while reading something, according to the person behind him. He drifted off and hit our camper and the minivan he was driving catapluted twice off of the camper with the bumper wrapped in the right front tire, landed upside down sliding 100 yards I think it was.
When it happened, I heard a crashing sound that lasted almost 45 seconds and upon the initial hit - I saw the front overhang of the camper coming down right on me. Next second may have only seemed 45 seconds long, don't know. Next thing I know I am on the other side of the underpass wall away from the camper, dazed.
I got up and a trucker pulled over and screamed as I got up, "Is there anyone in the camper?" and I couldn't speak. I started walking to the
minivan which was upside down where a crowd was already starting to form and I thought "I better go back and keep an eye on our stuff or what's left of it."  There were already people gathering around there, and when I returned the police and ambulances started arriving. I was shaken pretty bad and went to grab my cigarettes - and the overhang of the camper had crushed them and the soda bottle, landed RIGHT where my head was. At that moment my knees started knocking and I went into shock and dropped. They put a neckbrace on me, laid me on a flat board and I woke up in the hospital with a cracked rib and large bruise on my side
where 'something' hit me and knocked me off the wall. When I asked the female officer in the room what happened to the people in the van she said, "He didn't make it."
Not knowing this guy from Adam, I just started bawling. He was killed instantly, as the vans roof had a V in it that crunched down 6 inches below the seat, crushing him.
Here's the eerie part: months later we got the police photos of the accident, and the way it happened, the right front tire assembly wrapped up in the bumper of the camper and twisted it away from me, ripping it open like a sardine can strewing cd's and tapes all over the highway. The front overhang came down on the wall, while the camper itself pulled, AWAY from the wall making it impossible for anything to have knocked me off the wall!!!! However I had bruised ribs and one cracked when instead my head SHOULD have been smashed instantly by that overhang that came down fast. My reflexes couldn't be that fast for me to have flipped over the wall myself, so something else had to have caused it.

Some believe in guardian angels. I believe that could actually be loved ones who have passed on, but are still here as energies and watch over us. Who knows. All I know is if either exists, it was with me that day and knocked me of the wall. There is no other way to explain it. It is beyond my reasoning.

That left me with what I refer to as 'travel-phobia' since it was the first day of a seven week road trip (summer festivals were big $$$ aside from the mail-order division of our company) which was nerve-wracking the entire way. I gave up being a 'road dog' after that and over the years developed a fear of bridges and winding sharp ramps. I had recurring nightmares that are variations of the accident, one in which my head actually gets crushed and I usually wake up freaking at that point. Early last year I found out I have PTSD from that incident.

This trip, I am glad to say, was not only a joy, but helped me overcome some of those fears and phobias that had built up. Otherwise, I would have puked my guts out had I went over that bridge coming out of Canada into the U.S. that seemed to go on forever, as it winded and twisted a bit. I just looked down at the water, the lighthouses and boats and the waves and for the first time I was at peace on a bridge, after going over so many before it. That alone makes me feel good.

This twas a long yet short 16 day jaunt. The next big event is next month with headbanger week: Going to the Metal Mayhem Fest with Slayer, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, Marilyn Manson and a bunch of other bands are playing an all day fest on July 23rd, then the CHeadbangers LouCon begins the next day! Woooo Hooooo!!!! Registration going in the mail on Monday.   ;)

Peace,
Carl

How was the drum and bugle corps competition?

In one word - Spectacular! 8 competitors, and I called the winning group, Carolina Crowns. However, I expected another team, Boston Crusaders to take 2nd, as they had some pretty wild formations (which, sitting high up in the stands we could see everyone) and the footwork and performance was outstanding, but they came in 5th.

I never have been to a show like that before, so it was quite different for me... but I love all styles of music. So, after a drum and bugle corps midwest event, what better to follow it up with than an all day affair right before the convention.
Metal Mayhem Fest at Verizon Amphitheatre (formerly Riverport, which Axl destroyed right after it was built with the pouty riot)... bands include Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, Job For A Cowboy, Slayer and of course, Miss Mary Manson is headlining.
The next day I should be with a different set of headbangers.

I'm so glad that St Louis FINALLY is having a CH convention!!!! First the DavCon meet & greet was brought down here this past January. I've been begging for it to happen for years and, as I have said in the past, it was good enough for Pope John Paul II's last visit.  ;)

Less than 4 weeks. C'mon LouCon '09!!!!

Peace,
Carl

PS - After seeing all of the places I have the past two weeks and all the fresh air in Collingswood, Canada, coming back to the smog dump here in Granite reminded me of one thing once I got back into this air.
I need OUT of this town! The hydrocarbon factory 6 blocks away, I'm convinced, keeps me chronic.   :-/
