Title: Don’t sit in the sun!
Post by cavalier on Jun 15th, 2009 at 8:52pm
My new found freedom from the rat race began the other day.
The sun was shining and all felt well with the world.
Out came the deckchairs which were moved to the most strategic place to catch the best of the day. It doesn’t shine that often here
Parasol up, drink in hand, shaken not stirred and away we go.
Off came the chain mail socks then the breast plate and tunic (it was a trifle warm) decided to leave on the helmet and visor, “you know what they say about wearing a hat”.
Now, although quite private in the garden I realised it would be prudent to wear something to hide my modesty.
“Hmmm let’s see” “the union jack thong”.
Off I traipsed back to the garden in my thong, helmet and visor and hit the chair.
Before too long the helmet came off, “bugger, I’ll use that as a ice bucket”
Laying on my front it wasn’t long before, zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

“Be careful out there!”

“Yes dear” think I’ll turn over, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

After a few hours of grilling I got up and went inside.
The heat coming from my body was so intense the newspapers on the table curled.
Standing in the bedroom looking in the full length mirror, I saw!!!
Raspberry coolie with an almond flake springs to mind.
Spent the last couple of days being relieved with after sun cream (which wasn’t too bad) but I suppose the moral of this story is:
How many times have we said “never again” but we do,

Don’t you!!

Cavalier,

Hmmm...  I believe it was a song written by Noël Coward and first performed in The Third Little Show at the Music Box Theatre, New York, on 1 June 1931, by Beatrice Lillie that went something like...  "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun."

Wikipedia states... According to Sheridan Morley, Coward wrote the song while driving from Hanoi to Saigon "without pen, paper, or piano". Coward himself elucidated: "I wrestled in my mind with the complicated rhythms and rhymes of the song until finally it was complete, without even the aid of pencil and paper. I sang it triumphantly and unaccompanied to my traveling companion on the veranda of a small jungle guest house. Not only Jeffrey [Amherst], but the gecko lizards and the tree frogs gave every vocal indication of enthusiasm".

Having flown the not so friendly skies of Hanoi as well as targets along the route South to Saigon, and having spent a couple nights in Saigon all over three combat deployments to the Tonkin Gulf, I think I get it...

Cheers, and try aloe vera next time you burn yer bum in the midday sun.

Cheers...

V/R, Batch

I've done the chain mail, breast plate, and helmet thing as well... I've even worn a kilt, but without the union jack thong...   The latest ceramic body armor is far more effective... A lot liter too.

Having recently had a 50 cent piece (do they still make those) sized crater cut out of my forearm a few weeks back (skin cancer) and just yesterday having a number of "things" frozen off my face, which this morning are large red blisters, my mantra is sunscreen and hat!!!!!!

Ahhhh...the first sun burn of Spring. An annual, unhealthy ritual I absolutely relish! Do wish I had your flair for describing it Cav!!!!
