Title: Opportunity knocks...but was the wrong address:(
Post by Redd on Jun 18th, 2009 at 7:27pm
Sometimes, gut instincts (intuition) is a good thing to have.

The other day, I sent a cover letter and resume for this job posting.

This morning I got an email from Mark, the company president:

Quote:
Hello Peggy,

Thank you for your response to our Advertising Account Executive position.   I will review your Resume' and forward it to my Regional Sales Manager. We will be in touch to further discuss your Resume' provided your previous experience or employment skills meet our requirements. Thanks again for your interest in MediaUSA Advertising.

Then before the day was out, I had a phone interview with Mark, and he stated that he does a preliminary review of all resumes and applicants and then, if he's happy, he'll send them on to his regional Manager (Josh in this case) and he asked me if I'd be available to interview next week.

(Duh....)

Anyway...Josh is supposed to be calling me early next week, and I keep everyone posted as to the date...but this could be the break I've been waiting for.

Something in my gut tells me this one could be IT.

Any and all good thoughts and vibes and Prayers would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you everyone.

I really DO hope this one pans out.  Yes...it means some traveling and living out of a hotel room a few nights here and there every month, but they cover the expenses..and I can bring my laptop with me to keep in touch with the outside world at night once I get back to the room....lol.

Again thanks my friends...and I will let you know if and when Josh calls to set up the interview.

My first instincts are starting to turn to poor judgment.

During the phone interview I told Joshua would be contacting me Monday or Tuesday.  It was the end of the work day Tuesday when I sent this email to Mark.

Quote:
Hello Mark,

I appreciated your call last week for the informal inquiry about my skills, experience and qualifications for the Account Executive position.

When we spoke, I was pleased to have been able to clarify the questions you had at that time.

I recall you mentioning that you would be forwarding  my resume to a gentleman named Josh ( I do hope I've recalled that correctly) and asked if I would be available to travel to EauClaire this week to meet with him.

I'm writing to reiterate my interest in this position, and the opportunity to learn more about the full scope of products and services you provide to your customers.

I also look forward to speaking with Josh so I can further elaborate on my skills, and go over some of my most memorable accomplishments.

I appreciated the time you spent to phone me, and I look forward to hearing from you or Josh very soon.

Sincerely,

So I get this email back this morning.

Quote:
Thank you Peggy,

I have spoken with Joshua concerning your Resume' and he will be contacting you to set something up. I think he may be coming through your area, as from Eau cCaire he will be traveling to Oshkosh. He can discuss that when he calls you. Thanks again.

Respectfully,

Mark Leese
President
MediaUSA Advertising Inc.

Still no call from Joshua, and I'm wondering what I do from here.

Don't want to be a pest...but don't want to let it go till they tell me I'm no longer being considered.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest you stand by at least for another day.  He will surely get in touch with you, and if I were him getting pestered this quickly I would think you to be desperate, hence either not worth the position, or not worth the money you could make.  I know it is difficult, but patience usually wins out.

Well, It's official....interview Tuesday at 1PM in Eau Claire with the President.

Mark called this afternoon to inform me that the reason Joshua hadn't called was that Wednesday after he sent the above email, Joshua's wife needed an emergency C-Section 30 days early.

They had to get a few logistics in place to cover Joshua being out with his wife and new baby while she recovers...

Anyway, Mark is driving in from Litchfield MN and I'm to meet him half way in Eau Claire.

I went and got my hair trimmed, eyebrows waxed and over the weekend I'll be getting a couple interview outfits together to choose from dependent on the weather.

I still feel like this could be the one.

Today is the day my friends....

I'm off to the shower and hitting the road by 10:15 AM.  I have my calming CD's ready to pop into the changer and stay calm during the drive.  I have a list of questions I want to ask of Mark to ensure that this position is stable and that the company is secure.

Ok....on to it then.....

<deep breath>

Seemed to go well.  Mark said he was very impressed that I'd done my homework and knew the history of the company as well as how the MediaUSA division came about over the years.

He was also impressed that I had learned through my research that Joshua is his son, when I congratulated him on being a proud new Grandpa.

He asked very few industry/skills/qualification related questions, as he stated point blank that due to to my experience with advertising sales I already know and have performed the needed tasks.  He wasn't concerned at all about my willingness to drive, as I drove 2.5 hours to come to a 1 hour interview, nor did he question my ability to close a sale.

Mostly it seemed to me that he was testing my ability converse on the fly to gauge how quickly I can build rapport with a customer.   How easy or difficult I am to get along with, things such as this.

We agreed on many of the philosophies of the business, all of which I offered  first in conversation, and he would comment back that he likes this...or that trait in his "people".

Our largest agreement was in the practice of companies offering a commission only sales structure, and that the lack of investment by the company in the sales team by not offering a base, leads to high turnover, and less than ethical practices by the sales person in order to reach a livable income level.

We were practically finishing each other sentences, so we were definitely on the same page.

There was a small temporary glitch when I asked by what date they wanted wheels to the asphalt to begin training in this territory, (there are 3 open territories---this central territory and one for Madison and one for western WI EauClaire area.) and he said training would start the week of the 13th or the 20th of this month.

I mentioned my prior commitment to the convention, and what dates I was not going to be available, and he said that if I was to be offered the position he wouldn't let this stand in the way, that he would simply begin training in the Madison area first.

So...with the interviews ongoing the rest of this week in EauClaire and Madison, then Mark going over things with Joshua starting Monday, Mark said I should hear by next Wednesday at the latest if I've passed to round 2 of the interview process.

That's what I know at this point in time.
