Title: 40 years ago ...
Post by ClusterChuck on Jul 18th, 2009 at 3:47pm

Quote:
On July 18, 1969, a car driven by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard; although Kennedy managed to escape the submerged vehicle, his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned. (Kennedy subsequently pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and received a suspended two-month jail sentence.)

And the lush got away with a slapped hand, AND still is a U.S. Senator!

What does THIS say about our political system?

Chuck

(OMG!!!  Did I actually start a political thread?)

And 40 years ago Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were on their way to the moon, guided by less computing power than your cell phone.

Between these three and the lush, who's got the bigger set of stones?

And I was living at Red Hill, growing tomatoes, eating peas out of the garden and trying to teach a 9 month old to "walk" .  Well, except for the 9 month old.... some things just don't change much.... :P

I didn't have hair then. Or atleast it was cut really short. Wasn't really thinking about the Apollo Mission, or the Kennedy's. My world was small, green and unforgiving for a couple of years there.

Nearly to the day...

I had hair, though just like Kirk's (buzzzzzzz cut...Dad didn't support the barber trade)...seems like I may be revisiting that :P

Apparently my folks considered me enough of a "big boy" now to send me solo across country (Mt Vernon, Wa to Torrington, CT) on my first big jet trip. The joy of the journey only matched by the confidence displayed by them.

Stayed with my favorite Aunt (Rosie)...the walking, talking, funny emodiment of LOVE...for many years after (she made it to 99), we exchanged "salty jokes"...she always got me...and I'll never forget the laugh, giggle, guffaw...I MISS her somethin'.

Cousins Lou and Anita took me to New York City. There's a whole 'nother story there (someday)...but one part sticks out.
Went to the Statue of Liberty...up in the crown too. Can picture it now..
(well actually, I have pics too) but what really sticks out?...She had humogously BIG feet...I was fascinated...

Thanks for the memory jog Chuck...really good times...

Best,

Jon

Fourty years ago we were sitting in my Dad's cousin's living room watching the moon landing. My Dad was proud beyond belief watching  Buzz Aldrin, a former friend and classmate from West Point. I on the other hand was confused because we just had our beautiful 3 yr assignement in Panama cut short cause my Dad was on his way to Viet Nam a few weeks later. I really was confused about life and the military at that point. Very proud and sad at the same time.

Forty years ago I lived in Utica, NY and began photographing and selling Nazi war junk for the Mohawk Arms' military relics catalog. I loved it.

Lots of people my age didn't know it yet but in about a month...Utica being about 100 miles from Woodstock....there would be some interesting stories.  I never knew many locals that did attend the thing though but then I wasn't attending Syracuse or Oswego. Sally was already in nursing by then.  God we were boring.

It was a warm summer, but hot, slow, sweet and delicious at the same time....... Young men can learn a lot from older women.

Sorry, I got wrapped up in memories and forgot that this post was about Chuck's buddy Ted.

40 years ago this month, I was thrown from my horse and he stepped on and crushed my wrist.  The first of a long line of athletic type injuries.

Started Kindergarten that fall with my arm still in a cast.  By Christmas, it was re injured by my sisters husband who was pulling on me by that arm and rebroke it.
