Title: Almost made it two years
Post by nirvrush1 on Jul 30th, 2009 at 2:00am
My last cluster was about 20 months ago. Then, out of nowhere on Sunday at 5PM. Another hit me in my sleep at 2AM on Tuesday. Both times I took Maxalt, and I was back down in about thirty minutes--longest thirty minutes of my life. Always on the left side, from my eyeball to the base of my neck. It feels like someone has wedged a spoon in my skull above my eye and is trying to pry it out. It is the worst pain I have ever felt. I also take 240MG of Verapamil every night.

I am 35 years old. This all started about 12 years ago, a couple of years before I was diagnosed w/ Type 1 Diabetes. I had no idea what was happening back then. They would last a good two hours and over several days, several times a day. Then, a year to 18 months would go by. It was about four years in that I finally went to a doctor for it. MRI turned up nothing, of course. Then, two different doctors diagnosed me the same. Damn! I have often wondered if marijuana would have any affect on an attack, but I have never had the urge to smoke (drink, eat, touch, hear, smell, etc.) anything in the throws of one. However, I just read three different medical reports that mention an attack being quelled within minutes when marijuana has been smoked or the synthetic oral THC (dronanabinol) is taken. Anyone tried this?

This Los Angeles Times article mentions cluster headaches about half-way down.

Marijuana is a vasodilator and that is the oposite of what we need to stop CH pain. It is considered to be a trigger not a help.

The same for alcohol. Have you tried Oxygen (O2)? It is the best & safest treatment most of us use. With the proper mask and flow rate it can stop most attacks in minutes. Check out the "oxygen info" link on the left of this screen.

Good Luck,  Don

Alcohol and marijuana are almost universal triggers for most on the board. There is an exception to every rule but I'd be really careful with weed when on cycle!

Do read the oxygen info link on the left. It's enjoying a huge degree of success on the board. I can kill an attack in 6-8 minutes with it. Beats the 90 minutes of moaning and pacing I used to endure!

Welcome to the board.
