Title: Heat Headache? Post by Jeff2 on Aug 10th, 2009 at 5:13pm
Me and the missus drove from Nashville to Michigan the day before yesterday. Due to where we live and the fact that the car is worth less than the clutch on the AC, we drove the whole way with no AC (other than the 65 mph kind). Hot, uncomfortable trip. We drank lots of fluids and were grateful to get home. We were coming home from a family reunioun that involved lots of really good beer. The beer went down with no HA. I had an cold one or two when I got home. No problems so far.
Little pause here while I catch you up on the last two and a half years. Every six months or so, I start getting mini-hits in my eye. I go on the valproic acid and they eventually go away. Nothing I can't live with. Hell, I can hardly call them hits. Just tweaks that get more persistent. I haven't had to take an abortive for them. I'm on valproic now. The tweaks started about a month ago. Back to the other night. I went to bed and two hours after hitting the sack, I woke up to the beast driving a spike into the side of my face. I drank the thickest coffee I could make, took my Relpax and danced for an hour. I am happy to say that after two and a half years with no real hit I'd forgotten how much those damn things hurt! I went to bed again and slept the night through. The next night, I slowly drank a beer and nothing. No HA. Same today, except I'm drinking a bit faster. :) Could the heat have caused the HA? Is this something anyone else has experienced? |

I've found that if the heat is going to bother me, it will while I'm out in the heat.....not afterwards. But that's just me.......

Oh, yes! We have this question regularly, but not frequently......
Lancet. 1999 Sep 18;354(9183):1001-2. Comment in: Lancet. 2000 Jan 8;355(9198):147. A new cluster headache precipitant: increased body heat. Blau JN, Engel HO. Exercise, a hot bath, or elevated environmental temperature provoked cluster headaches, within 1 h, in 75 out of 200 patients. This new observation accords with recognised precipitants--alcohol, histamine, and gyceryl trinitrate--perhaps via generalised vasodilatation or hypothalamic activation. Publication Types: Letter PMID: 10501368 [PubMed] |

Yes, This spring I made us a nice hottub in the garden.
When I take a bath I'm almost sure to get hit during or shortly afterwards. Nelis |

The heat always triggers a hit for me, but it's usually not while I'm out in it... it's when I get home and begin to relax. Unless I've taken D.H.E., the beast is going to torture me.
I now have TWO conditions that make it so I can't tolerate the heat. I live in Texas...so I'm screwed. |

Thanks for the info. Now if I could just claim a swimming pool as a medical necessity...... ;D

Heat is a definite factor for me....but then almost everything is a trigger...i wish i could have a beer but i get an attack just taking in the empties from my friends drinkin beer around me.
I find the best way to cope with an attack is to get in front of an AC in my truck or in my RV. Laying on a cold tile floor is also helpful, so yes definitely heat is a major trigger for me. |

Yes, the heat is a factor for me as well. I usually get hit after coming back in from the heat after a short time WHAM [smiley=bash.gif] headache time. Some times it will affect me while still out in it but that's only if I've been out in it for an extended period of time. Try wearing a hat it does help. I'm not much of a hat wearing person but, if I'm going to be out in it for awhile I try to remember to bring one.

I am quick to develop heat exhaustion, even when not in cycle (and in cycle, heat makes CH much worse).
Melatonin and Puerarin (in kudzu) both induce hypothermia, or lower body temperatures. Not sure if taking kudzu would help me take the heat ... not overdoing it is the key, but can't stay inside all the time. Saturday I was doing the sun and sweat tourist thing in St. Augustine, which left me wiped out and semi-sick on Sunday. |

I was about to ask this same question! I made it almost a week from the Sunday before last without getting a CH until yesterday when I went out in the yard to plant a tree, got hot and sure enough I got hit...
And I was just about ready to do the beer test to... :-[ |

Heat is a definate trigger for me. If I go out to garden or in a hot kitchen or hot shower etc bam I am dancing. It limits my activities.

Got nailed by demon attack last night due to heat...my fault too though...Should have known better than to try and hang up some nifty net lights to decorate a wall in my house in humid 87 degree heat...Fans not helpful... :-/

More good advice/info from Bob. Yes, if I am ALREADY in a cycle of clusters, rapid change involving heat/cold will do it every time. Try to cool down very slowly (outside shade first, then garage, then in the doorway, then in the house). Sometimes it works. In my personal experience, the alcohol would be the first thing I would think of. No way would I drink even one drink during my 8 week cycle! Good luck!
