Title: How about combining O2 and cold? Post by bejeeber on Aug 20th, 2009 at 2:05am
Breathing cold air aborts an attack nicely for me during the first week or two when an episode is ramping up.
So...any ideas or established techinques out there for breathing cold oxygen? (Looking forward to trying the new O2 procedures outlined on this site if I can find a doc for a prescription. Gee willikers the headache clinics here so far are run by arrogant a-holes...they refuse to give me an appointment unless some other doctor jumps thru hoops giving them all kinds of proof of my qualifications, then maybe they'll give me an appointment in November. Yeah nice work, a real great service to the CH sufferers. >:( ) |

I suppose you could use a 50' hose and coil it through a bucket of ice.
You know that when a gas expands (like it does when we use O2 from a pressurized tank), its temperature drops, right? It's already cooler than room air when you're breathing it in. |

Ice cubes in your humidifier and breath through your nose to get the cold air closer to the seat of pain? ;)

There are two ways of cooling the oxygen, that I know of. The first method, has already been mentioned, and that is to put ice cubes in your humidifier, if you use one.
The other method was developed by an old timer, here, and that was as follows: - Purchase the 25 or 50 foot hose, for your mask. - Take a tall plastic container, and fill it about 3/4 with water. - Take the long hose, and leave out a couple feet, and then coil the hose into the container, leaving a couple feet of the end, also, hanging out of the container. - Put the whole thing into the freezer to freeze that water solid. - Once it is frozen, and you get a hit, hook the tank up to one end of the hose, and the mask up to the other end, and start sucking away! - Once the hit is over, return the container back to the freezer, so it is ready for the next battle. When the oxygen goes through the coiled up hose, in the ice, it cools it down quite a bit. This method has been very beneficial to some sufferers. I hope it helps! Chuck |

I used Kip's "tubing in the bucket" trick years ago. (I used copper tubing for better conduction)
It seemed to help at the time, but NOTHING like 25-40 lpm! Marc |
