Social Security just had an increase in the last year or so and it was known then that there wouldn't be another for 3 years.

Last year when it was know we did not know we would have to watch millions given to banks and car makers... We want to find money for the government to run health care (Have To according to the Obama)... But Don't give any more to Social Security! :P |

It's a messed up situation for sure. While a lot of other countries have negotiated lower prices for the most common meds, we have still pay higher prices and premiums. It's the price we pay for the innovations and trials these drug companies do for us. It takes millions upon millions to come up with a new drug and for better or worse, we pay for it. Biomeds are even more expensive to create and those costs for drug makers can reach billions.
IMO, we don't need a public option for affordable healthcare, we need to get on these insurance companies and regulate the ever loving sh_t out of them. I for one DO NOT want the government having anything to do with my Daibetes, Clusters, or even a hang nail. I was with Kaiser Permanente for years and if there is a model for an HMO, I think these guys are it. |

OK, here's my question, and this is not just for general discussion.
I'm 63 years old. My "retirement age" to get full SS benefits is 66 years. My employer is shutting down by the end of this year. I've checked, and if I apply for SS at 63 to 64, I will take a loss of almost $800 per month. But! Here's the question....if I wait until full retirement age of 66, will there still be SS, or will it have gone into history? Should I go now and take what I can get, or wait with the possibility of getting nothing? Sandy |

In my town, we have a local SS geek from a Lutheran Social Serivces office. She writes a column on Medicare and also answers questions. She helped when I got down to disabiltiy and extra Medicare drug coverage. You must have someone in your area that will help. Look around now, not later.

And about 60% of the research is done overseas. Drug companies lie about this all the time. They like to "research" drugs that sell, not nearly as much drugs that work. As a result, a lot of the crap they come up with are drugs searching for diseases. They usually come up with something obscure like erectile dysfunction or arcane stuff like "restless leg syndrome." Thank God we now know of the latter. ::) Charlie |

This worries me...I am 40 something...have a few years left before retirement age, but in the mean time I am paying into SS because the GOV says it's law and I may never see any of the money I have paid into it. It's like saying, "hey there's nothing better I could be using this money on, here have some"... [smiley=eek.gif] Like I'd every really say that to being with!!!
Lets see I have ... medical expenses, a house that needs fixing up, would like to help out more with my sons college education, need to fix the fence out back, I could go on here...but you get the idea. |

I think you are pretty much right, Charlie. I have only had a brief glimpse at what happens at a couple of R and D companies. One was Genentec in Vacaville and another was "f__k you we're not paying our bill for services rendered in the same area. These guys are serious about what they do and from what little I've seen, they deserve some profits. But on the same note, I don't think we should have to charter busses to cross into Canada or God forbid make ANYONE travel to Mexico for medications. Hell, I'm more screwed than a lot of other people my age because of what I need to take everyday and I just thank God the little blue pill isn't one of them. |

You know, they should forget the politics of the thing or trying to scare us by saying that for some reason north of the border, drugs become deadly to Americans. There should be no restrictions nor should we be discouraged from seeking ways to afford to stay alive. You're right. For God's sake be really conservative and leave us alone. Drug companies aren't going to go broke if a bunch of gray-hairs ride a bus to Ontario and pick up Lipator or somesuch, they'll do just fine. Geeze. Charlie |

Or they'll start to become more competitive. What a novel concept.
