Title: Have doc appoint in 2 hrs for imitrex, or generic?
Post by bejeeber on Aug 25th, 2009 at 12:33pm
Hey y'all with more recent imitrex injection experience than I .... I'm about to go to the doctor and I just realized that there are generic forms now...

I will try to Google about it and search here if I can, but what's the word around here about generic versions of the injection - are they OK? Still 6 mg that can be split into a couple doses?

FYI - I'm hoping to get an O2 prescription too.

I'm not an injectable user, but my neuro explains to me that the dosage precision standard is a wider range than is required by the FDA for brand name stuff. In other words, the generic dose has to contain something like 85-115% of the proper amount of actual medication.

That, as far as she knew, was the only difference between the two.

I have taken exactly two doses of sumatriptan in pill form (knocking down the immediate hit with O2), and I can tell you that it killed the beast just fine.

Bejeeber,

Your PCP can call in the Rx, fax, file directly with your pharmacy of choice, or hand you the script...  Any way you go when you get to the pharmacy, ask for the generic...  It is "slightly" less expensive...

My wife uses imitrex for migraines and we're seeing a clear drop in the cost with the generic sumatriptan succinate.

If you were not successful in obtaining the Rx for oxygen therapy, you may want to call you PCP back for a prescription after reading the following link.  It will walk you through how to obtain a proper written prescription for oxygen therapy:

START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

The out of pocket (no insurance) cost per abort for imitrex runs from $7 USD for 50mg tablets to $58 USD for an injection...  I average $1.50 to $1.60 USD per abort with oxygen using M-size O2 cylinders and have no side effects...

If you can get the Rx written for 25 liters/minute the success rate/abort is well over 90% at an average time to abort of 7 to 8 minutes.

Take care,

V/R, Batch

I've been using the generic since it came out and can't tell the difference.  I used to pay $80.00 for a shot and it's down to $40.00 with the generic.  I use the vials.  Best of luck.

Malcom

Thanks - I'm back from the doc now (physician's assistant actually) and was successful at getting both imitrex and 02 prescriptions. I have some O2 "M" tank action ordered for delivery soon.

Expecting a high flow rate regulator delivery (Flotec, mail order) soon too. My 02 supplier was incredulous when I brought up the idea of 25 LPM.  :P

Glad to not be hearing of any bad experiences so far with the generic Sumatriptan. It's been a longggg wait for the lower cost generic!!
