Title: I think I might have cracked it!
Post by michael on Aug 26th, 2009 at 9:44am
Hi gang

Sorry I`ve not been around for a while. Been out of work for a while so had my mind occupied on finding a job.
Had my usual attack late last year. Been a sufferer now for 43 years! Been using imitrex injections for the last 10 years, but as you can imagine I`ve needed masses of them.
The last attack was the first I was able to try info from a good neurologist.
Went on a two week steriod taper when I first noticed them. Also immediately started on verapamil. Got up to 560mg/day and they stopped (ecg every week I upped it by 80mg). Found then I could drop it to 400mg before they came back. Each time I dropped to check if they had gone, I just needed injections for 3 days before the 560 dose took them away again. This attack lasted 6 months, twice as long as normal. But the difference was I hardly knew they were there. Even went to Mauritius for my daughters wedding without a single attack. They wouldn't let me scuba dive there though cause I was on verapamil. Not holding my breath that the next attack will be so easy, but its the best I`ve ever managed.

Great news Micheal, I am kind of new to the board but a lurker for 2 years even when out of cycle. I've learned my leason I am here for good to also spread any news, change, encouragement. It has also been my longest cycle (10 weeks) but also my weakest cycle nothing over kip 5 and only needing energy drinks to hold the beast at bay. I am trying the kudzu (synergy) method by kilowatt. Started 2 days ago cant tell a  difference but will give it a good week or 2. Grew up in Fort Walton Beach , Florida  love to dive and I did not know any contraindication with verapamil and diving. I have not had to resort to the verap or prednisone or even the migranol spray this cycle due to the low intensity of the hits. I am definately looking into the oxygen regardless this cycle or next. Joe and the others have realy given me some good info this cycle. Now I am just kind of riding her out but it does get a little old even at the low level hits (Sinus Pressure only).Anyways glad it was a low level 6 months and hears hoping the remission is longer also.  Jay

Thanks Red
Regarding scuba diving, apparently stating verapamil on a medical form throws up alarm bells that you have blood pressure problems. I couldn`t convince the doc that I didn`t, and I`d also had 6 normal ecg`s and regular normal bp tests, and that the meds were for cluster headaches. I`d ticked verapamil and that was the end of it as far as he was concerned.
