Title: Melatonin anyone? Post by REDS DAD on Aug 27th, 2009 at 7:15pm
Hi Fellow Sufferers;
I'm new here, only my second post, but not new to the "Beast". I'm a forty nine y.o. male living in California. I've been suffering from these friggin things for years and can't seem to find a Dr. who knows anything. Here's my question. Has anyone had any luck with Melatonin? I read about it on the OUCH website. For years, I have taken O.T.C. sleep med's every night to help put me out. This has got to be screwing up some internal organs! I think I read that a dose of 9-12mg before bed is o.k. even tho the bottle says 3mg. Has anyone had any luck with this supp? Any input would be greatly appreciated. MIKE |

Melatonin has virtually eliminated my nighttime hits. I take 6 mg at bedtime, bumping it up to 9 mg when I'm in a bad way.
Stuff works. |

Thanks Brew; I went out and picked some up today. I got the 5mg, timed release. I'll start out with one at bedtime and work up to 2 (10mg) if necc. Mike |

I took 12 mils last night.
i used to buy the 5's, but then i found the 3's give me more mathematical options. lol guess my answer is HELL YES, and i combine it with Magnesium at bed time. I aslo take GABA and feverfew during the day. |

Great!!!
Melatonin has helped many of us avoid the nighttime hits, allowing us to actually get a little sleep/rest. It can take several night of taking the pills until your body gets used to it, but, it really does help. SandyC |

I started at 5 recently and they do help with the nighttime hits. I have very vivid dreams when taking this.

I'm actually glad to hear that because I tried 10 mg last night and it didn't do jack. Will keep on keepin' on with it though in hoped that my several nights will end up earning me some results. |

I had an old bottle of melatonin for a long time. I started taking 9mg 4 nights ago. And as the bottle is almost empty, started doing 6mg. As frequent "night hitter" I had high hopes. Out of the 4 nights, I got a HA only 2, and these were pretty early in the night as I had gone to bed early. I have not yet woken up with a 3am 5am headache.
I will keep this regimen up. Thanks! Joshua |

I appreciate seeing all the info on melatonin, and it led me to do a little more reading (AFTER I bought some and started using it TYVM).
The medical reading material implies that there's no added benefit to using more than a 3mg dose. Of course those statements aren't related to pain management but rather to its use as a basic sleep aid. Is anyone in the CH medical community studying melatonin? I have my first meeting with the top doc locally (that I have found) on CHs at the UWMC Neuro Headache Center in Seattle next month and I have this on my discussion list for her. |
