Title: Some becoming the fewest
Post by Kevin_M on Sep 1st, 2009 at 3:35am
Seventy years ago today, invasion of Poland left almost a million dead, wounded, or captured after the first month of an intensely grim and deadly six year war.  A salute today to the few still remaining and all those the world over who became the somebodys who had to stop this.  I've only one WWII serving relative left.

Also this day one year later, during a month long Battle of Britain, the "few" putting in one day of  a "finest hour".

1330hrs: The fighters of the morning raid had hardly returned to their bases, rearmed and refueled when they were once again placed at readiness as a large formation had been detected again coming in over Dover. It was all a carbon copy of the earlier raid and the enemy bombers again broke into smaller groups with some approaching London over Dover and Ashford while another headed north and came in following the Thames.

1345hr:  85 Squadron Croydon (Hurricanes) stayed with the combat but could do nothing to slow down the advance of the German bombers which had been reported as being 150 plus strong and consisted of Do17s, Bf110 and Bf109s.

To the eventually prevailing heroism, thank you.

Good stuff Kevin. I'm still waiting for a book or two at our library. This anniversary will slow things down a bit but I'm a patient man.

Only one left in my family too.

Never had any relatives who fought in the second world war. It was very difficult for many Irish Catholics to fight for the British, even though it was against a greater evil.

However, my Protestant Grandfather fought in Ypres, Belgium during the great war for the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers.
