Hey Keith welcome to the board, many find the best approach to be a 2 pronged one:

A good preventative medication, lithium, verapamil, topomax, etc. One you take daily while on cycle to reduce the intensity and frequency of the attacks. Some combine the verap and lithium. I use lithium at 1200 mg a day while on cycle. Blocks up to 70% of my attacks.

A good abortive. Oxygen should be your first line abort. I can stop an attack in less then 10 minutes huffing the 02. Read the link on the left, "oxygen info" complete with color photos. It's cheap, easy to set up, and next to miraculous in how fast it'll kill an attack.

Start reading like crazy, hoping we can throw some ideas your way to help you out.

Joe
