Title: o2 question please
Post by agonymum on Oct 19th, 2009 at 5:02pm
hi ,

i use a non rebreather mask . i have a problem with it because i feel as if i am breathing in the exhaled air that i have just breathed back into the bag .
i think this might be psychological , as i know thats not supposed to happen with this mask . i have the open holes either side to vent the exhaled air however it doesnt seen to get rid of it quick enough and it makes me panic .
i get all upset and cant maintain my breaths , its like i am suffocating .

can anyone advise me on what to do ?
im not using verapamil or any other meds at the moment , my cycle has only just started , im trying to just stick with the o2 .

pf days and nights to you all  :-/

thanks

debbie x

My advice would be to order an O2ptimask from this site at:

If you have open holes on your non-rebreather, it's not a non-rebreather. They should have little rubber diaphragms over them so they seal off when you inhale, and you're getting nothing but the good stuff - the fresh O2 that's accumulated in the bag. When you exhale, they should let loose and allow your spent breath out the holes.

Trust me - you're going to want to get rid of that thing.

As long as the bag is full you are o.k. Breathe faster and who cares if all the exhale goes out the holes loosen up on the mask on exhale and clamp it on on inhale.

hi

im more confused now , it does say on my bag 'venticlaire non-rebreathing mask ' but the holes are just open there is no flap on them or anything ,

thanks for the link , i will look on there now . i have been lifting the mask so my exhale breath can escape more quickly , its a horribloe feeling and on top of the pain , it just makes the panic worse when im breathing for my life if you know what i mean .

also meant to ask is it normal to have a tingle , numb feeling around mouth when finished with the 02 ?

I'm sure the mask you have is the disposable type issued in the hospital or by durable medical goods companies. They'll do in a pinch, but you are one of God's chosen ones. You get to become intimately acquainted with your mask.

Get a good one.

Try using a mouth piece in lieu of the mask.

If your mask has holes in it, you are not getting 100% O2.

That's the one. The beauty of it is that it comes with both a mask and a mouthpiece. Use whichever you're more comfortable with. I use the mouthpiece, and I have three of them - one for home, one for the car, and one for the office.

Hi Debbie,

If the holes on the side of your mask are open the best thing to do for now is tape them shut and lift the mask to exhale. Also, when you exhale it won't go into the bag.

I have recieved masks without the flaps over the holes. If you tape them shut you will get 100% O2 and much better abort's.

Please check out the following link from "oxygen info" to learn more.

Mine has a little post surrounded by the holes, on either side of the mask.  By default I believe my mask had one side blocked with a rubber bladder, so when I breath in, the bladder would block the holes, and move away from the holes when I exhaled.  I may have picked up two of them, and took the rubber bladder from one, so that I could block both sides and I'm able to breath in and out without issue, getting 100%.

There's also a rubber bladder b/w the mask and the bag so that only O2 fills the bag.

Don't worry about ordering it with a mouthpiece. It comes with both a mask and a mouthpiece. If you find you don't like one, you can switch to the other.
