Title: My new coffee maker... Post by Jeannie on Nov 9th, 2009 at 10:57am
makes my coffee taste like CRAP!!!!
All I can taste is plastic! It's terrible! I don't know if it is because of my super sensitives senses due to my cycle or what. I've run two pots of coffee through it and just plain water. Any suggestions? I NEED MY COFFEE!!!!!!!!!! Jeannie |

Fill the tank to capacity with vinegar, run it through, then rinse it with three batches of water, filled to capacity.
You might want to get a small package of Starbucks Via (instant) for just such times - while you're waiting for it to clean. |

Thanks, Bill. I'll try that. I'm ready to eat a handful of coffee grounds!

You could make cowboy coffee on the stove. Few scoops of coffee in boiling water, let the grounds settle and pour carefully.

Ditto what Brew said about the vinegar. Always do that when getting a new pot. Also, if you do decide to make cowboy coffee, put an eggshell in with it, they help to bring the grounds to the bottom (or something to that effect. My aunt always did this when we roughed it camping).

Ditto Ditto on the vinegar. Also ditto on the eggshell, Mel. My grandmother used to put eggshells in coffee all the time...even in her percolator.

Well, Jeannie? Did it work?

Dilute the white vinegar( 1 /2 Cup---8 cups water)---If you use too much white vinegar--The coffee will be awful!!!---( Run the cycle three times with pure water--NO MORE VINEGAR)

Scott - We've been running full-strength vinegar through ours every few weeks for like 27 years. What does diluting it do if you rinse it three times afterward? |

I'll let you know in the morning. For now, I dug out an old mini Mr. Coffee that Randy and I got back before we were married. That thing is over 20 years old and it still worked! It only makes four cups at a time though. ( Only makes two in my giant mug. ) I ran what vinegar I had in the house through it. I can still smell that plastic smell. Next time I'll stick with Mr. Coffee instead of buying a maker that LOOKS nice! Jeannie |
Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by zwibbs-Scott on Nov 9th, 2009 at 4:50pm
Bill---run 1/4 vinegar---3/4 water through the filter---Then run 3 full all-water 10 cups of water---and clean the whole pot----What are the expectations of the Brewers????---Our scene here is ridiculously awful!!!

You didn't answer my question: What good does diluting it do if you're rinsing it three whole times? I would contend that it does no good whatsoever. Full strength vinegar is going to dissolve more of what makes coffee taste bad, and three rinses takes the vinegar taste away quite nicely. I'm not thinking about baseball yet. We'll see what they do with the cap money they free up over the next two months, then I'll start thinking about expectations. |

Just buy a Bunn, best coffee maker ever. Had one problem with it leaking and bun replaced after having it 5 years. Makes 12 cups in 3 minutes

Me too with loving my Bunn - 10 years old and works as well as the day we got it. Nothing like a cup of HOT coffee in 3 min.
Plus it has this really cool little spring thingie that you can clean out all the gunk that makes coffee taste bad :) Cat |

Thanks! Jeannie |

Vinegar is for cleaning out mineral deposits.
The next new rig use baking soda, it takes out flavors and smells of the plastic. Paul |

I love my Bunn too! It is over 10 years old and I thought the heater was going out, then John took it apart, cleaned everything and when he put it back together, it worked like a charm. :)
Glad your coffee is better today, Jeannie |
Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by Brew on Nov 10th, 2009 at 10:35am
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Bunn coffee makers all heat the pot from the bottom? I'm much more fond of brewing into a thermal carafe so the coffee isn't heated after it's brewed.
Maybe that's just me. |
Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by Jeannie on Nov 10th, 2009 at 10:40am
I bought mine cause it was pretty! Yep... I'm a loser!
Jeannie ETA: What kind of coffee maker do you and Pat have, Bill? I really thought that they all had hot plates on the bottom. Maybe I should read the features instead of relying on a coffee makers good looks! LOL! |
Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by Brew on Nov 10th, 2009 at 10:54am
We have a Cuisinart, 12-cup thermal carafe. All stainless carafe, so no glass to break. Uses the Melita cone-shaped filters (#4). Makes great coffee, and the last cup is just about as hot as the first, and tastes just as fresh.

Bunn's do have the heater at the bottom too. The heater that I thought was going out was the water reservoir heater. When you put in the cold water, it forces out the hot water and that is how you get hot coffee in 3 minutes. The cold water then heats up in the reservoir. A pot of coffee doesn't last longer than an hour at my house. :) |
Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by Jrcox on Nov 10th, 2009 at 1:27pm Brew wrote on Nov 10th, 2009 at 10:35am:
actually Bunns store 12 cups of hot water in a reserve tank. to make coffee you just add what you want for that pot and it uses the hot in reserve and replaces with the cold you just added. That is why it is so quick. it does have a hot plate but that is just to keep it hot. |

Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by Brew on Nov 10th, 2009 at 2:14pm
For those of you who like your coffee to continue to be cooked after it is made, by all means, fire up your bunns.
As for me, once the heated water is released to come in contact with the coffee grounds, that's the last heat I want to see applied to it. I'll keep mine hot in a thermos, thank you very much. |

We use a 12-cup Cuisinart too. I just turn the hot plate temp down as low as it can go. Once it's done brewing I immediatedly dump what doesn't go into my cup in to a thermal carafe. I bought the same machine for two of my kids. I swear by them. -Dennis- |

There's this crazy flippy sortof thing on the side of the Bunn. If ya push it it kinda goes flip and a leetle light comes on. If ya push it back the light goes out. If ya leave it with the light off I am assuming the hotplate stays cold. I've never experimented with it though. One pot =two cups around here. Does this help ya Brew? Potter |

Whenever the world has better coffee, we're all enriched. Therefore, never send to know for whom the Bunn toils; it toils for thee.

Title: Re: My new coffee maker... Post by catlind on Nov 10th, 2009 at 5:48pm
Brew, do you have a coffee grinder? If so, I'll have my coffee snob hubby send you some of his fresh roasted (he roasts his own) and then I'll ask Santa to put a french press on your Christmas list.
The freshest coffee in the world is what we drink every weekend. Clark roasts it Friday evening, allowing the oils to settle over night, then grinds it and boils the kettle then adds the boiling water to the fresh roasted fresh ground beans and runs it through the french press. Now that's spoiled. The rest of the time we use the Bunn. The hot water reservoir is what keeps the coffee hot - the hot plate never comes into play in our house. Cat |

In the industry of coffee houses, Bunn has a reputation for being one of the best coffee makers there are. What people do to the coffee after they make it is what separates a decent coffee house from a great coffee house. It's really sad to see a place that keeps their brew heated instead of properly insulated, and even air pots can destroy flavor (which is why you see many more gravity-fed systems now). Brewing coffee isn't an art (selecting and roasting the beans is!). Brewing coffee is a science with predictable results, and predictable consequences for not following proper procedures.
I'd be happy to have a Bunn, but I'm partial to espresso, so I have the Jura S9 Impresssa. One button goodness. |

Ok, X the french press, and I'll have to see if FedEx can overnight some fresh roast for ya - any preference? Columbian, Australian, South African? A blend even? :)

I was considering the Caraf Style maker once I'm better situated financially. That way, what I don't drink at home I can bring to work with me at the strength I like it to be. But Dyl called earlier today to let me know that the Microwave went to hell, so that will be first on my list of must purchase items.
It was 17 years old...it gave me plenty of good years of service. Just wondering when my TV that is 22 years old plans to give up the ghost. :-/ |
