Title: Advice please!!!
Post by Netty7246 on Nov 11th, 2009 at 4:04am
Hi.  Thanks to this site and everyones help in my last cluster I have a proper diagnosis and have O2!!!
I started this cycle last night and the O2 helped abort the attacks, but I wonder if I'm doing something wrong....It stopped the attack for about half an hour and then started again.  Each time I used it for about 15 mins and it did stop a full blown nightmare, but I had to do this about 4 or 5 times.  Can anyone tell me if I should be doing something I'm not to stop it completely?  Or is that typical.
Thanks for any replies....

Hi Netty    I think thats pretty typical, without taking any prevents, or any other stuff.
Perhaps you could try some Melatonin before bed, it helps me a lot.
If you are trying to go the no drugs route, there is always Kudzu, taurine, rc seeds, etc ....just read up about them.
If you go for the prevents, Verapamil works pretty good, although some say it prolongs the cycle :(
I am sure some others will chime in to help with their advice, just hang in there!         lorac

I had the same thing happen the other day.  The hits were coming one right after the other.

I took some time and read through the oxygen advice on this site again and realized:
-during the night I wasn't able to get on the O2 right away, so the pain level was higher and I needed to use 15 LPM to abort
-I made sure that I was breathing deep and filling my lungs with oxygen (instead of being hunched over banging my head!)
-I was running low on oxygen and trying to conserve it so I wasn't staying on it long enough after the pain was gone.

Now the O2 is working 90% of the time and the hits are further apart.

I also take 6 g of Melatonin before bed to help with the night time hits.

Stay positive that your oxygen will work, I can't imagine my life without it

In my personal experience, this is the key to successful use of oxygen to abort.  Many stop breathing it as soon as they feel relief from the pain, trying to conserve their supply,  only to have the pain ramp back up again a few minutes later.  Stay on the tank for another 10 to 15 minutes AFTER you feel no pain.  Oxygen is not expensive, and to me it's worth the extra few minutes of use.

I agree wtih Sandy.  When I was coming out of my cycle I would have consecutive hits(only kip 5) but enough to use O2.  I found another 10 to 15 would help a bunch.

Sandys right, because if ya dont do as she suggested, the O2 just seems to push back the CH for a little while instead of aborting it......make any sense?

Mikey...... :)

Thanks guys.  That's all been really helpful.

I stayed on it longer for both hits last night and I had a proper break in between...It seems to be working....Yay!!!

I may need to post this separately, but wondered if anyone else is being prescribed steroids??  This is the latest  my Neurologist wants me to try.  I haven't seen that on this site...

Thanks again for the advice
