Title: What's your favourite Christmas Film?
Post by LeLimey on Dec 3rd, 2009 at 10:16am
So.. tell me!

What's your favourite Christmas film?

Mine is nothing unusual, I love "It's a Wonderful Life" as I'm sure so many of you do. That film never get's old and Christmas just wouldn't be the same without it. In fact, I watch it many times throughout the year not just at Chrimbo!

Another biggie for me is "The Wizard of Oz" YES I KNOW ITS NOT A CHRISTMAS FILM!! LOL But - it was shown at Christmas day at 3pm every year when I was a sprog and I loved it, I still do, it still makes me get so excited when it goes from black and white to colour and it's a necessary part of Christmas for me.. just a tradition I guess.

The reason I started all this though was to tell you about Jasper's and a little story that goes with it. Advent is a wonderful magical time, and I wanted to share a real "Clusterville Magic" story too.

Jasper loved the Polar Express. The year it came out we all went to see it and loved it, it's a wonderful wonderful film, and I highly recommend it.
Anyhow, At the end of it, the little boy who doesn't believe in Christmas gets a"bell in a box". I won't  explain more in case you haven't seen it.

Well nothing would do for Christmas that year for Jasper but a bell in a box. If you asked him what he wanted that was all he would say. I went everywhere trying to find a sleigh bell and a red and white stripey box and was failing dismally. I was truly afraid it was going to wreck his Christmas. It was wrecking mine.

A present arrived for me from Lizzie and I didn't open it  because I knew it would be the only one I had, but then on the 23rd, totally down in the dumps, I did open it to cheer myself up.

I sat and sobbed. Great big wracking sobs. I couldn't believe it.
She'd sent me a gift box with lots of little bits and pieces in it and a big warm hand knitted scarf (which I still have!) ... and in the bottom for a joke was a sleigh bell attached to a bit of leather cord  - just like a sleigh rein.

The box had red and white stripes on it too as well as a picture of Santa.

I couldn't believe it and I'm tearing up again now. Well, that box went right at the back of the tree with the bell in it and lo and behold on Christmas Morning, Jasper, completely confident crawled under the tree to look and there it was. Just like on the film, the last present was his bell in a box.

Santa didn't let him down. He asked for it, he got it and he believed utterly in the magic (of Lizzie)

I have never in my life had any present that has brought me so much joy and I don't think I ever will.. that was the best ever, seeing his utter faith and it not being disappointed.

I couldn't fill his wish - not without Lizzie and the clusterville magic so I guess the moral of the story is never lose faith, don't give up hope. There is nothing that we can't get through together because there is nowhere like here and the magic of the family we have.

My favorite has always been "The Bishop's Wife". The original, 1947 version with Cary Grant and David Niven and Loretta Young.

NOT the crappy new one with Denzel Washington.

I am partial to all the Santa Clause movies, but my all time favorite, ever since I was a wee one, has always been The Little Drummer Boy.  I still tear up when the little lamb gets run over by the cart!!

Helen, those are the kinds of stories that let us know there truly is magic in the world, and it comes alive for every boy and girl (no matter their age) at Christmas time :)

I've had a number of very special events occur at Christmas that are the reason, even at the age of 41, I agree with my Dad (who maintained his stand on the issue until he died at 58...)....

Yes Virginia, there REALLY IS a Santa Claus!

Cat

I Believe :)

Well, since you can't spell favorite correctly, I will nominate a show that isn't really a film.

I can't go through December without seeing 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'. Love the forty-five year old animation, love the story, love the dancing. :)

Totally agree with Barry. Its not christmas until you've watched Lampoon's x-mas vacation and Bad Santa. Don't know about everyone's sense of humor, but Friday after next is pretty damn funny also. Not usually my taste but I love it for some reason.

For me, nothing comes close. After that, I like "A Christmas Story," ---I'm the dad of course...and "A Charlie Brown Christmas." "Miracle on 34th St." ain't bad at all...

Christmas brings out so much good stuff.

If we were in Canada or the UK... WE'D be spelling it wrong.  Eh?

"It's a wonderful life"  number one all time and all throughout the year too.  At the end I always get depressed though,  thinking..."How did my life, change anyone for the better ?"

2nd. would be ther same as Charlies.  1951 black and white version of a Christmas Carol.   True Dickens!!!

"the Bishops wife"  I cannot believe that Pat and I are the only ones who loved that movie with Cary Grant.  Purely magical...

Great story Helen!!!

"It's a Wonderful Life" is our favorite.  Me and the Missus have it on DVD and always watch it with nothing but the tree lighting the room.

As a fund-raiser this Christmas were showing "It's a Wonderful Life" in our local theatre. 250 tickets already sold out, so it's a big favourite with most people.

For me it's superman 1 & 2, I dunno why....every year it's on and every year I watch it.

My mother had told me of going to the theater to see the movie as a kid.  When Dorothy opened her door to the color world of Oz, she remembered the entire place was one gasp.  For most all children, it was the first color ever seen.  She was eight.

Like that film and as Lefty mentioned, for some reason I like watching "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn.  Seems to be on at Christmas each year.

With as much dignity as he could muster, the Old Man gathered up the sad remains of his shattered major award. Later that night, alone in the backyard, he buried it next to the garage. Now I could never be sure, but I thought that I heard the sound of "Taps" being played, gently.
