Title: RIP Gus
Post by deltadarlin on Dec 24th, 2009 at 9:32am
Gus was a *rescue*.  The people who lived in the woods behind my house, abandoned him, his brother and a German Shepherd.  Gus and his brother were left, tied up with no way to get food or water.  His brother died.  We got him and then placed the German Shepherd in another forever home.

About 5 or 6 years ago, Gus and his new friend, Hanzel (another rescue) dug out of the back yard.  Somehow, Gus ended up with both his front legs broken, but he made it back home (the vet said that he still didn't know how Gus made it taht far with two broken legs).  He was in casts for 6 weeks.  Stubborn dog learned to walk on this casts.

He died sometime yesterday.  Jimbo said that it looked like a massive stroke or heart attack had gotten him.  Gus was apprx. 13 years old.

Here he is, taking it easy after he got injured.  He almost died then.  The steroids he was on caused his kidneys and liver to start shutting down.  For several days, the only way he would eat or drink was out of my hand.

Carolyn...so sorry for your loss...so grateful for your rescue mission....THANK YOU. Did that once, 15 yrs ago, with a chunky boy cat...he too would only eat
if I got down on the floor with him....remains heart wrenching (couldn't keep him)...

You gave Gus a great life...I'm sure he gave you unconditional love...it don't get much better than that....

Best,

Jon

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

It takes a special human being to rescue abandoned animals and care for them. I'm glad Gus had lots of love before he went.

Many hugs,
Langa
