What is in Red Bull that some of you find relief from? Any articles/studies on those ingredients?

Caffeine and taurine. Together. It's a pretty good combination for constricting blood vessels.

I seem to be getting relief from rock star. My work is a sponsor of some kind? we have a big rockstar bus parked on the premises and free refrigerators filled with them.
Curious? who discovered this treatment? was it someone on the site? |

i prefer 5 hr energy drinks because of the taste and size. red bull makes me heave at the smell. 5 hour energy doesn't taste good by any means but its small. caffine and taurine are the necessary ingredients.

I found this kinda interesting....
Taurine was originally isolated from bull bile in 1827 (hence the name of the drink), but fortunately it is now made synthetically. Taurine's actual effects are wide-ranging - it is an inhibitory neurotransmitter (in some cases acting as a mild sedative), an age-defying antioxidant, and has the potential to steady irregular heartbeats. |

Its strange, I was going to ask this same question in here. I tried redbull for the first time to abort a cluster recently and it actually worked for me. I was surprised, I'll have to do some more tests at the onset of an attack, to really say it aborts my clusters.
I have never drank redbull by itself, although I have had many a jager bombs and I can say on the nights I have had a jager bomb instead of just alcohol, I can't ever remember getting an attack. :D whether I got one or just couldn't remember ;D Joke, I would have remembered. I know redbull has: Niacin 100% Vitamin B6 250% Vitamin B12 80% Pantothenic Acid 50% Carbonated Water, Sucrose, Glucose, Citric Acid, Taurine, Sodium Citrates, Magnesium Carbonate, Caffeine, Glucuronolactone, Inositol, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine HCL, Vitamin B12, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Colors. Caffeine Content: 80mg /8.4 fl oz (which is one can) For those that stated its the caffeine and taurine together that aborts an attack, are you 100% for sure on that? I'm not trying to say you're wrong, I seriously doubt its the B vitamins, because I take a B-Complex daily and still get clusters. |

I would be very interested in what type of regimen you are on, with the taurine magnesium/calcium. Thanks |

Find yourself a concoction that has everything else in it but the caffeine and taruine, slam it at the onset of an attack, and then report back. Science in everyday life. (You can do somewhat of the same experiment by doing this with a drink called Amp. Has the same levels of caffeine, but only has 40mg of taurine per serving instead of the 1000mg in Red Bull. Also doesn't have the B vitamins if I recall - I don't know anymore because I don't use it because it doesn't work.) |

In answer to the original question, I don't know of any scientific studies. It is all anecdotal evidence primarily gathered on this site. We get very little by way of scientific anything. It was only this year a study on the use of O2 was done for us, and it was outdated as to the flow rate use before it was printed. (I am grateful for what we got though!)
The caffeine taurene combination seems to be the key to its use. Caffeine by itself is helpful to me, but it will not kill an attack. I've not tried taurene by itself, but I do know the energy drinks with the combo will usually kill a hit for me in just a few minutes. I also prefer the 5hr Energy drinks for the same reasons mentioned earlier. Sorry your post was hi-jacked. ;) It is a frequent occurance around here. Jerry |

There’s no real regime simply follow the instructions on the bottle/packet the tablets come in. Get the 500mg magnesium/calcium combo if you can, it just saves taking another tablet. The Taurine will be what you can get your hands on , I think mine is 200mg, you will need the calcium otherwise you will end up with a calcium deficiency due to the magnesium blocking it and end up with just about as much pain from muscle & joint pain as the CH. The simplicity is, my take on this only: Magnesium is a neurotransmitter & we need that to assist the hypothalamus to function better, Taurine is a promoter in that it accelerates the metabolism of other substances “Taurine turns caffeine into super caffeine”. The other thing you will need & this is important PATIENCE, you will see from my diary below that it took a long time for this to start gradually working for me. Cheers Barry Day of last hit 2/10/2006 First big break Today's date 20/06/2007 First day of getting hit again 261 = Days since last hit Day of last hit 20/06/2007 High cycle started again Today's date 9/08/2007 High cycle ended 50 Days getting hit Day of last hit 9/08/2007 Low cycle started Today's date 1/06/2008 Low cycle ended 297 Days since last hit Day of last hit 1/06/2008 High cycle started again Today's date 24/07/2008 High cycle ended 53 Days getting hit Day of last hit 24/07/2008 Low cycle started Today's date 11/1/2010 536 Current pain free run |

The Red Bull has been kicking ass for me this cycle! I felt light shadowing coming on the week prior to Christmas(clever bastard, same as last year!). I busted using a small amount of shrooms on the 2nd. The next morning was the rebound headache, about a KIP 5, no where near as painful as in past years. Next day, same thing. Since then, I've slammed 2 sugar-free RB's at the onslaught of headache. All CH sensation ceased in about 10 mins, and I've only had about 4 hits since busting. So far, this is the least painful cycle I've ever had. Knocking on wood ;)

That's interesting cause I always use full sugar Red Bull, only because I'm sure I read on here a couple of years ago the diet version wasn't as effective. Mind you, you do drink two. Out of interest do other folks get relief from just one can or do you find it takes more? |
Title: Re: Red Bull Post by Conrad V on Jan 14th, 2010 at 1:53pm
Never tried RB myself. What do work for me the last 21 months is simple Omega 3. Take 3 capsules 3 x /day at start of cycle. After that 1 capsule 2 x /day. Lot better than all the chemicals I took for 13 years.

There is sure A LOT of positive reports coming out about omega 3s, especially in the form of fish oil. (Altho omega 3s are in a number of oils, like flaxseed and walnuts. It seems the modern diet has gone overboard on omega 6s --from soy, wheat and corn.)
Incidently Red Bull is a brand name. If I were to give a brand name for fish oil, like Flap Jack's Fishy Supreme, I might be accused of trying to sell something. Is Verapamil sold as a generic? YOURS TRULY, DANiEL |

Are the "LOT" of reports related to CH's? I'm not challenging the potential value of Omega 3 - just asking how you see it pertaining to CH's. Thanks in advance, Marc |

Title: Re: Red Bull Post by danielpeterson on Jan 19th, 2010 at 10:28am SORRY for dilly-dallying and dragging my feet about a response, but I AM one of the unwashed masses that does not have a computer and have to go to the library to communicate this way. All i am (humbly) saying is that I have heard --and I have been tuned into the health food movement a good forty years, ever since I was a hippie-- great things about using Omega 3 in the form of fish oil. And fish. And grass-fed beef. As you know, the brain is made up of large amounts of fat and it stands to reason if it is to heal (and isn't that what we are trying to do, not slap band-aid after band-aid on this condition) we should give the body some high-quality substances to work with? |

Is CH a condition that can "heal?" I suspect it is more of a deformity. If I have a child that is born with a cleft palate or a club foot, should I feed him large quantities of bone meal in the hopes that it heals? Seems to me you're not approaching the condition properly. Some things heal, other things have to be "fixed," whether they're fixed "one and done" or constantly have to be fixed over and over. |
