Title: Tapering Inderol (Beta Blocker) Post by candid on Jan 5th, 2010 at 5:12pm
Hi
Been detoxing from my cluster preventative meds over the last month and i'm down to my last one which is my beta blocker. I take 120mg of the sustained release a day. Been taking it for over 2 years. Just was wondering if any of you had any experiences...in terms of withdrawal symptoms or if they affected the cluster activity. |

I took propanolol (generic) for Inderal during 2 early cycles. I believe it worked once and the 2nd time really couldn't tell any difference. I took it again in my latest cycle and had to switch to something that worked.
All 3 cycles, i tapered off and suffered no withdrawels, actually felt better because propanolol (like a lot of others) makes me feel bad. |

I've actually experienced some serious withdrawal effects pertaining to clusters from the inderal. My advice to anyone weaning off is to do it slowly. I can't be sure its the withdrawal from inderal but since coming down from 120mg to 80mg my clusters have gone crazy.

Propanolol is not something to just stop cold turkey. The heart gets used to having it there. If you are looking to lowering it, talk to your dr. about putting you on the non-slow release form. That way at least you'll be able to better to monitor if your blood pressure starts to spike.
Personally, it has done wonders for me. Once I was to taper off, the clusters definitely increased. Not to mention the increasing agitations levels during an attack. Paul |

In hindsight I probably should've dropped only 20mg or 10mg rather than 40mg but neither my doctor or I predicted such a dramatic effect. I thought the verapamil would be the one that gave me problems.
I am taking the regular, not-slow release as I wean myself off the inderal. Around 2 years ago when I start taking the inderal I remember being so happy with the effects. It didn't take away my clusters but it seemed to reduce the frequency experienced while I was at work. But looking back it was likely just a low activity period in my never-ending cycle and sure enough my cluster frequency increased and decreased many times over the last 2 years and I don't think the inderal played a role. |
