Title: Don’t know if anyone asked this question yet Post by cavalier on Jan 10th, 2010 at 7:33pm
we’ve entered a new decade and I’ve seen and heard it mentioned but no real answer to the problem of “what” are we calling it.
Now I remember memories from my parents and grandparents usually starting with “I remember in the forties” etc and I suppose mine will be the eighties or nineties (I wish). I don’t suppose its life or death and there are more pressing things to worry about, “But I do worry about it” “How am I going to sit my great grandchildren down to tell em stories from now with…? “I remember in the two thousand and tenies” or two thousand and elevenies” It just doesn’t slip off the tongue in a nostalgic kind of way like the sixties, “does it” In the decade when Prince made a comeback with the cover version of “My ding a ling” and virtual work was the norm, the Wii magnate the favourite followed closely by bosses bit on the side 2 evolution. Still haven’t answered my own question yet but I’m working on it. Hmmm let me see… how about… “I don’t bloody know!! “I don’t bloody know!! I feel as frustrated as a nomad with a camel who’s got the hump. It’s no wonder my head hurts. |

God you people know how to rub it in. In the fabulous 40s, I was born. Back then, TV came on at 4:00 PM and off at 11:30. All there was left was test pattern. From what I read, you Brits were a tad ahead of us in television. Anyway, I had a number of relatives born back in aught 8 or aught 9 so that makes sense to me. It's a big deal here what to call the next decade but I guess the teens works for me. Charlie |

Yes, the Gregorian calendar has no year 0, it goes from 1 BC to 1 AD. The first decade went from year 1 to year 10. The second decade started in year 11 and ended in year 10. Public opinion has created an imaginary year zero so the first decade ended in year 9. Just because something is public opinion doesn't make it correct. Paul |

Yeah, no easy 20's or 30's to refer to and haven't seen much mention about it when talking about previous first and second decades. I guess nothing sort of stuck. Looking back from the 20's and 30's, it might seem clumsy to refer to the first and second decade, but perhaps other ways to label them just haven't been catchy enough to be widely used.

Sometimes things can settle into what today may be most easily communicated, grouping each particular ten position together as a decade. Referring to the sixties would not include the years '61 - '70, moreless '60 - '69, encompassing a space of ten years. I can't believe it. When I went to post this, I got an error message that read: This field only accepts numbers from 0-9. Gremlins. |

I've heard the last 9 years referred to as the "OH's" - like OH-9, Oh-5, etc.
Just our luck Oprah will sue for use of the OH's . . . . ;) |

It's been a not fun last 10 years so "Oh Shit" decade or Time Magazine's "Decade From Hell" fits well. Happy New Decade. Charlie |
