I agree with you on that one. How can anyone "own" who dat? You know how people here love their Saints. I'm thinking this one just ain't gonna fly. Barbara

Boo Dat!
I have to tell y'all that after the game on Sunday me and Dianne stumbled out onto the porch with tears in our eyes and started screaming and yelling Who Dat. We live in a rural area and all we could hear throughout the woods were all of our neighbors doing the same. Fireworks were going off and car horn emergency buttons were pressed and even the dogs were howling. It seemed to go on for a while. When I shared our experience with many of our friends and family, they said the same thing happened in their neighborhood. In a way we have already won. The Who Dat Nation is buzzing. God help us if the Saints win. Steve G |

Most common phrase I heard after the Saint's game was "The Saints won, hell has frozen over". Now Melancon has thrown in behind Vitter.
And it does appear that *who dat* is trademarked, BUT, not by the NFL. "Meanwhile, WhoDat Inc., controlled by longtime Saints fans and brothers Sal and Steve Monistere, also claims rights to the phrase. In 1983, Steve Monistere produced the song "Who Dat Say They Gonna Beat Dem Saints" with Aaron Neville and several Saints players. In a statement Thursday, WhoDat Inc. said that before that recording, there were no branded items with the motto. The brothers said the company has the only federal trademark for "Who Dat." Steve Monistere said he and his brother were at the Saints' first game in 1967 and have been fans through all the ups and downs — mostly downs, of course. " However, they aren't being quite as assy as the NFL. In response to one of the sellers of the *who dat* t-shirts "As for Thom, she said several New Orleans attorneys have offered free legal help. And how about the WhoDat Inc. guys? They "were nice" about the situation, Thom said — "they said we should market the shirts together and make more money together." |

To add a little cultcha to this whole post- did you here that the New Orleans Art Museum and the Indy Art museum have a bet going on too? Whoever wins gets a loner for, I forget how long, But some really land mark paintings. Funny to hear them do some trash talkin'!

Art Dat!
Here's little story y'all might enjoy. When excavations for the construction of the Superdome began, human bones were unearthed and later remains within coffins. After further examination it was determined that that area was used as a cemetery during a yellow fever outbreak back in the 1860's. Many attributed our lousy record over the years on the spirits that were unhappy being trapped beneath the stadium. Without some sort of intervention, voodoo or gris gris, the team could expect a continuation of the bad vibrations. Then came the storm. It tore openings in the roof and allowed these trapped spirits to escape. In 2006 the Saints went to the NFCCG and while the next two seasons were less than successful, the feeling was that the curse finally was gone. Crazy? Only in New Orleans is it considered a truth. Just bringing this back for a moment, finally rattling some "who dat" memory recollection.
It was casually popularized afterward when in Gone With The Wind, Scarlett's mammy Hattie uttered the phrase. This perhaps might, but not quite, put it in the realm of a now further appropriate phrase, "ah'sta la vista, baby." ;) |
