Title: Everything is white......
Post by Racer1_NC on Jan 30th, 2010 at 1:49pm
....outside.

I'm sure those in the great northern frozen tundra will laugh at the following images but around here.....this is a big deal. One store open in our small town...people on ATV's riding around.....snowplows out......and a few 4wd trucks on the roads.

From the street in front of my house.....

I've already been to the store for a coffee and managed to piss off someone in a Subaru that seemed to believe 8-10 mph was plenty fast enough for conditions.  ::)

I feel certain the driver's seat in said Subaru will  need a good steam cleaning now......  START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

Your right, coming form the cold white north, that's justa pretty dusting. The last storm we had , I had a seven foot drift in front of my door. Course the neighbor across the street still had grass showing. Ahh to live were the winds blow-hard!

Hope it's warmer there......balmy 15 here......on it's way to 0.   :(

We just ended the sub zero snap here Jackie.

I was having...ummmm....bowel issues yesterday, and the pipes at the office were frozen solid, meaning no water to the "throne room".  I ended up calling head office in Green Bay and came home where I was near a working throne.

Snow is snow.  Doesn't matter where you live.  It's pretty if you don't get it often, otherwise it's just a necessary evil - and a pain in the ass after the first snowfall.

Pat, we don't get it often, but there's nothing pretty about 200' of driveway covered in 14" of frozen precipitation :o

I'm sooooooooo ready for spring!

Looks as if you have about the same amount on the ground that we have, Bill.  Doesn't usually snow a whole lot here in the valley.

Best,

George

My pellets stay nice as warm all by themselves - as God intended - thank you very much. ;D

Yes Bill that's a lovely dusting....

Talk to me when you lose the power, heat, water and phones because of the stupid white stuff.  What's up with that shit anyway??

Coming from snow country, I think nothing of driving in a few inches of snow, anything under 2 feet is fair game, at least, it was til I discovered what the folks in Western NC think about it.... OOF.  Ice?  No prob, they think it's just another day, snow? they FREAK.

If I have ONE MORE MAN tell me that "you'll never make it up that hill in that mini van" I'll throttle him.  Not only did I make it up the hill (without his help mind you) but then passed him further down the road where he had gone in the ditch.  I waved and smiled and drove on.

I only wish someone had told me in advance of said storms that when you have a well system and the power goes out, your water stops too.  Fortunately the Dec 18th storm had enough snow to melt to flush toilets - oy.  Now I know to fill bathtubs if there's a snow or ice winter warning.  I'm all for living off the land and such, for a day maybe two....but FIVE days? NOT.  Next time, I go stay with someone who has running water and heat.

Keep your white stuff Bill, it's purtier there than here.  And it's damn near impossible to fix a jacked up computer and internet when your power keeps going out!

:)

That did work well for a couple of folks for a couple of days....until of course they couldn't get any fuel for their generators.  No trucks with ANYTHING (including the damn trucks with the money) could get into the region.

If I owned this place I would damn sure have a generator, and the 2 fireplaces would not be heatilator electric propane fireplaces.....I may have a chat with the owner on the fireplace issue anyway and have new inserts put in that don't require power to use them.  Something to do with the exhaust?  All new to me, never had septic, well, propane, none of this mountain folk stuff LOL.

But I learned my lesson Brew, now I prepare - we have the gas grill with 2 full propane tanks at all times, non-perishibles, stock of drinking/cooking water, lots of candles, even more LED flood/flash lights, and of course the campfire :)  And I fill the damn bathtubs!  Tactical baths ya just gotta get used to though.

Our fireplace got us through when the power went out 4 or 5 years ago (wood burning).  Also, we can always pull our camper out and live in there till the power goes back on, LOL!

You're right about the generators though, unless you have access to unlimited fuel, not much help they are.  That's why we LOVE wood!  I've even wanted to get a wood burning stove to pu in the shed for cooking (you never know!). ;)

You don't need unlimited fuel. Just enough to get you through until the power comes back on. That involves only running it when you need it and then shutting it off to conserve.

I'm just saying, in my opinion, wood is the perfect renewable resource for times like these.

I've got nothing against wood (we burn wood in our fireplace), but it won't keep my freezer or my CPAP running.

Fuel is the reason there is 20 gallons in cans next to the generator plus when you fill up 3 cars, well......ya have plenty of gas. At least enough for a week......the longest we've been without power.

Freezer is moot this time of year up here (stick the stuff out in the snow), but as for the cpap, I totally understand...

Hey Cat, sorry for the craziness!  You can blame this guy...

Brew has it right. We used a generator at the cottage years ago. It's not easy to ration its use but you have to. Gotta have an oil lamp or two around too.
