Title: Gabapentin (Neurontin)
Post by Headache Boy uk on Feb 6th, 2010 at 8:53pm
Hello all.
Just trying to do some research on Gabapentin (Neurontin) which my neuro prescribed in doses up to 1200mg/day for when my next cycle starts (may it be a long time ).

I know I've already asked about it in my "neuro at last" post and thanks to Bob-Johnson and Brew for there replies.

I was just wondering if any one else had used it and if it helped or not or what ?

looking forward to hearing from you all  Nigel

I used it during my last episode in the summer/fall.

It took over a week to kick in (as expected).

Even though it "only" reduced the amount of attacks I was experiencing (didn't quash all of them), it was still a bit of a godsend, because it kicked in right when I was reaching this peak cycle where things were about to spin outa control, with more rebound hits than I could dispatch with my O2 and 1/2 dose imitrex injections.

I felt the usual wooziness side effect for a little while, but that went away and I felt pretty normal while on it after that.

So Neurontin was my preventative, O2 and imitrex my abortives.

My number of unabated full length, full intensity hits experienced for that episode:

Zero.

Thanks bejeeber that's the first positive comment I've had on this drug.

I tried it with no results.  Everyone is different you just have to try it and wait and see.  Good luck

I could never get rid of the 2 martini buzz.  It made driving dangerous.  Didn't do anything for my clusters either.

That said, I would not discourage you from trying.  You never know, it might be your magic bullet.

I hope it is...

Nigel,

We're all wired differently so meds like neurontin (gabapentin) tend to work differently.  Titrating up to the max dosage by increasing the dosage by 300mg a day is important.  You might find relief at 600 to 900mg a day.

I took my dose at night to avoid the usual 2 to 3 martini buzz and driving with same...

Do watch for the side effects...  Other than a pleasant martini buzz, the most common side effect is a swelling of the ankles...  If they start puffing up make sure to tell your doctor...  He should give you a diuretic...

Take care,

V/R, Batch

Just remember, never increase or decrease dosage without medical supervision. Gabapentin is used to prevent seizures and paradoxically, many of those types of drugs can cause seizures if misused.
We can only tell you what WE have done.
We do not know your medical history or any possible interactions with other drugs you may be taking
ALWAYS increase and decrease dugs according to what your doctor decides is the best regime for YOU!

Thanks every one . Ive researched the drug on the web and read thru all the info and the common side-effects etc which always sound horrendous but I try to keep an open mined about these things .

Ive not been hit for nearly 2 months now but I still get those annoying shadows most days , red bull will see them off when they get too annoying . But they make me fear I'm going to get hit again soon  :(  I just hate the looking over my shoulder all the time .

So I'm just trying to get the weapons sorted out before they do come back.

Sorry I'm rambling on again.

Thanks again  Nigel

I don't like the sound of martini buzz , I don't think it will go to well with my job as a carpenter. I mainly do structural stuff (roofs etc) so it might not be to clever working at heights, not to mention using power tools. I've already nailed my hand to a roof with a 4" nail from my nail gun, it hurt quite a bit - not as much as using a claw hammer to pull it off again. Still, just a tickle compared to a CH.

Look at the bright side - it's impossible to nail BOTH of your hands to the roof without assistance.
