Title: My Marine lost everything
Post by Karla on Feb 15th, 2010 at 9:50pm
My newly married Marine son Chris had his car stolen on Fri. night in San Diego area.  It was full of his uniforms because he was in process of moving from on base to off base housing.  His completed and filed tax forms with his ssn was in the car also.  His marriage certificate they needed to get her id and medical benefits and housing allowance etc was stolen.  We have been in contact with the insurance company they will cover the car but not contents.  He is devistated.  Please keep him in your prayers.  This newly married couple did not need this.

Despicable people who would do this.  I am so sorry for him right now.  Hopefully he'll be able to get some help in RE-retrieving everything he needs.

I'll pray that whoever did this will have a conscience.

You are so right Karla, that he didn't need this.

He/they will definitely be in our prayers.

Gayle.

Sincere concerns to them, Karla, for their difficult steps to get through this in time.

San Diego is notorious for this.  Both of my daughters had their cars stolen while going to college in SD.  It's a quick hop accross the border to Mexico from there.

Very sorry to hear this Karla. :(

One of my Marine brother-in-laws had his identity stolen just before he got out after serving his 4 years.  Of course, he took the option of having his SS# tattooed on his side instead of the dog tags. :-/

Not sure as to where I was going with this! :-?

Anyway, hope they find the vehicle with his stuff in it ASAP!

This makes my blood boil too. Also it would be nice if the insurance company (such a thing as good will....well maybe no longer) might offer to help out our Marines....not necessarily more money but something.

Just got a call from my son.  His car was found.  The interior was stripped.  No speakers, cd and radio gone, air conditioning stripped out, seats out, gutted pretty much.  They sprayed an oil in the car to get rid of fingerprints.  He will have to see if the insurance company wants to write it off as being totaled or let him fix it up. Also our home owners policy will cover the loss of his uniforms.  Both the car and homeowners have $500 deductables.  YUK!  We can't afford that right now.  We just got done paying 500 deductable from me and a friend backing into eachother at church.  No damage to her car but about 1,000 to mine.  We are broke. :'(

Very sorry to hear that Karla.  Can your son pay the deductible?

I like to believe that what goes around comes around and who ever did this really crappy thing has got it comin' to him in spades. Sorry this happened to you.

As far as I am concerned this should be treated as a hate crime plain and simple, anyone that would take a car knowing it belonged to someone serving in the armed forces truly hates this country and has no respect for the country they live in.

That is horrible, Karla.  I hope they find the persons who did this.

Recently there was a young serviceman in the area who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  His mother had collected all his personal belongings and while she was in a restaurant, someone broke into her car and stole all the items.   :'(  I really do hope she gets her son's belongings back, but since it was over a week ago, it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

I don't understand how anyone could steal from a serviceman who is sacrificing so much to protect and serve this country.  They truly are the scum of the earth and I hope karma bites them hard!  >:(

Sorry Karla!  Please tell him congratulations for me on the marriage, and I'll be praying he gets things worked out with the ins company.  I also hope the perps get caught red handed by someone who will defend his property! [smiley=oops.gif]  (Joe, I really didn't say that, but I meant it!)

Karla, I checked with a friend of mine whose husband is also at Miramar to see if she had any more suggestions for resources to help your son - in addition to what Carolyn already suggested, here's a couple more ideas:

He should check the thrift store at Miramar (open T, Th 10-1) to see if they have any uniforms that would fit him.  I don't know what they charge for them, but they'd be much cheaper.  Not sure about MCRD.

He definitely needs to call one of the three credit reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion (go to the agency and add .com online to find numbers) and put a fraud alert on his ss# so that no one can open credit in his name (they will have to call him at a specific number <such as his cellphone> to get authorization to open any credit...even if it is him requesting it.)

Marriage cert..needs to call the town/city hall where he got married and have them send another copy.  They'd probably charge but he needs it.

If he talks with his FRO (Family Readiness Officer) which should be assigned to units, unless he's at boot camp, that person could get him help too.  There are places like San Diego M.O.M,'s  (Military out reach) and Operation Homefront, all of which can be found online who also help with problems like this.  Probably won't get a car but might be able to do something.

Hope this helps.

Christy
