Title: Damnit~pics added~new ones! Post by deltadarlin on Feb 24th, 2010 at 7:47pm
all to hell. Due to my white trash neighbors that live across the road from me, I can't even go outside anymore most evenings. They are burning the trash out of that POS trailer that the POS people had been renting (the pile of trash that they got out of the trailer would be the size of a small trailer lot). Burning trash, that cant' be bad can it?
Of course, when you start throwing plastic, mattresses, and vinyl on the pile, you get a nice little mix of toxic smoke being given off. If I go outside, it will automatically trigger a migraine (and if it's the right mix of chemicals burns, no matter what I do, the headache won't go away). We've filed two complaints with DEQ and nobody is doing shit. Guess it's time to start calling our Senator and Representative. >:( |

Title: Re: Damnit Post by Opus on Feb 24th, 2010 at 10:03pm
They finally made it illegal in New York State. The smoke is very toxic. If it is a large fire you can try calling the non-emergency number of you local Fire Department.
Paul |
Title: Re: Damnit Post by deltadarlin on Feb 25th, 2010 at 8:54am
It was not that large of a fire. Not only that, our fire dept. is volunteer and they don't even have the proper gear for fighting a fire that would create that type of toxic smoke.
I don't ever see them outlawing burning trash where I live. We are much too rural and don't have any type of garbage pickup. |

Title: Re: Damnit Post by M.R. on Feb 25th, 2010 at 11:10am
Woops
Somehow that fire made it's way to the trailer itself. Gotta hate when that happens. Mike |
Title: Re: Damnit Post by Linda_Howell on Feb 25th, 2010 at 11:27am
LMAO @ you Mike.
Carolyn, is there anyway you can get a few of the neighbors together and go over to them and present your case in a respectful way so as not to make them angry? If it's legal to have a fire like this to burn trash...maybe the EPA or some agency like it could be involved if they won't stop. |
Title: Re: Damnit Post by hug a root on Feb 25th, 2010 at 1:39pm
Last week my white trash neighbor caught his white trash house on fire.
I went outside to take a smoke and smelled that nasty plastic smell and I thought he had set fire to the furniture he had piled up to burn. Then I took a closer look and saw the flames comming up through the ridge. On my way back inside to call 911 and I heard the fire trucks on the way. Now he has more furniture added to the pile. Can't wait for him to set that ablaze. Found out that he started a fire in the fireplace when the upper part of the flue was cracked off and the fire went into the attic. He also suffered some minor burns when he went back into the house to get his motorcycle out. Unfortunately he has already reproduced. Root |
Title: Re: Damnit Post by midwestbeth on Feb 25th, 2010 at 4:06pm
LMAO @ Mike & Root!
Make a pest of yourself, Carolyn. Keep calling everyone over and over and maybe they will get tired of the squeaky wheel and do something. I feel for you about the migraines. Mine have been acting up lately and it sucks. Nasty smell triggers are the worst. Good Luck and let us know if anything gets done. (we can hope) Beth |

I really don't give a damn about making them angry (besides, I promise you, I'm far better armed than they are). Don't have enough neighbors to even get together to talk to them. NEWSFLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The guy with DEQ (Jimbo knows everybody) has been out sick. He called JImbo today to let him know that he had been buy and taken pictures. PLUS! Since this *place* is classified as a trailer park, it is required by law to have a sewage system ( a suit was filed years ago and the DA ignored it). She is actually running shit (literally) out on the ground where it drains into a natural watershed. So, DEQ will be completing a full investigation! |

DEQ: Department of Environmental Quagmire?
In NY we have the DEC: Department of Environmental Conservation, is this the same thing? Paul |
Title: Re: Damnit Post by deltadarlin on Feb 26th, 2010 at 8:03am
DEQ=Department of Enviornmental Quality. Opus, I looked at the website for NY state and it seems that your department is several rolled in to one.
Taken from the LA DEQ website "The mission of the Department was originally envisioned to manage all environmental concerns. The initial argument was whether areas such as wildlife and fisheries, parks and recreation, wetlands, scenic streams, litter control, drinking water, and agriculture and forestry were considered environmental management areas. With the exception of litter control, which moved to DEQ in 1993, all of these areas have, by definition, remained in other departments responsible for their particular management and control. While certain responsibilities have been transferred to DEQ over the years, environmental concerns of other departments necessitate interaction with DEQ. ". |

La DEQ has been called, came to look. Sheriff's Office has been called and came and put part of it out one night. Also there is NO septic system, tightlines run to a gulley out back. $hit runs on the ground. I wish they would start another meth lab there (already been one) that would be a good excuse for explosion and fire ;D. Will see what DEQ can do, since the district attorney refused to follow up on all the Dept of Health and Hospitals could do.

Should be able to see them all now (had to fix the links). Take a close look at the second pic~the one with the play pen on the porch. If I'm not badly mistaken, that's a girlie magazine in there (yes it is).
The place has a wonderful reputation! Call the sheriffs' dept. and all you have to tell them is " Mary * trailer park and all they do is ask which trailer. You don't even have to give them an address. I truly dread this summer when all the kids are out of school. Kids in the road, bicycles/toys/whatever left in the road (and that's now). Just imagine what this did to the value of my custom built home. |

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by deltadarlin on Feb 26th, 2010 at 8:14pm
There were kids in that trailer, don't now how many though. And kids live in at least one of the other trailers. I don't understand how humans can live like this.

I hope this gets resolved soon for your sake, real shame when people don't care. |
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by stevegeebe on Feb 26th, 2010 at 10:57pm
Carolyn I don't know what to say.
I'm totally shocked. How anyone can accept this level of slovenliness is beyond my capacity to understand. Human Beings have throughout time shown the capacity to write poetry, create art of a profound level, make music, write and engineer beautiful things. Scientists have determined that only 1% of our DNA is different from our nearest relative the chimp. After seeing this and similar examples of the litter slim that some of our fellow Humans leave behind, I can only surmise that some of us have not the degree of difference determined by our scientific community. My God... How can someone live this way? I don't care how poor one is..at least you can be clean. I've got to stop. More than likely we're all paying for this in some fashion. Steve G |

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by deltadarlin on Feb 27th, 2010 at 9:52am
Unfortunately, a civil suit is out of the question. There's nothing to sue for. Creating an eyesore? Polluting the atmosphere (cant' prove it). Not only that, civil suits cost money and time, neither of which we have an abundance of.

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Feb 27th, 2010 at 10:35am
Could you call the Children's Aid which might then do something about the deplorable conditions children are living in.
That might then start other investigations going. |
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by deltadarlin on Feb 27th, 2010 at 10:58am
The people who lived in that first trailer (one with all the garbage) have moved. As to the others, I've actually seen worse when I worked for on a project for the NIH (national institute of health). As long as the kids are being fed, have a roof over their heads and are being sent to school in proper clothing and not being beaten or abused, CPS won't intervene. Living in filth is not against the law, unfortunately.
|
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by Linda_Howell on Feb 27th, 2010 at 11:01am
After looking closely at the trash in the 1st. picture, I'd say there were 3 kids living there. A playpen for an infant, a boys bike for a kid around 8 or 9 and some plastic kids furniture for a small girl.
I've actually seen houses a lot worse than this in my time. Both in California and Kentucky. I will never understand why people are content to live in filth and squallor. Especially when they have children. This had nothing what-so-ever to do with poverty in my opinion. It's how THEY were raised or how much drugs they're using, and plain laziness. I hope the parents screw up and dosomething illegal so some agency can take those kids away from there. |
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by deltadarlin on Feb 27th, 2010 at 2:15pm
There is noone living in that first trailer any more (the one with all the garbage).

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by NancyB on Feb 27th, 2010 at 2:48pm
Maybe you're going about this the wrong way. See if the CDC can help. The raw sewage has got to be a health hazard, plus they're federal and the DA has nothing to say about it.
|
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by deltadarlin on Feb 27th, 2010 at 3:26pm
Nancy,
Do you even know what CDC does and how they do it? I'm sorry, CDC would not even think about this. This is a local problem and DEQ will either handle it or I will go to my Senator/Reps about it. |

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by NancyB on Feb 28th, 2010 at 9:50am
Actually I do know what the CDC does. We had them here locally when the water in a small subdivision here was contaminated by sewage water. The local government would do nothing so a friend of mine reported to the CDC. Raw sewage in the water supply is asking for dysentary and a host of other very bad things- just ask the folks in Haiti and New Orleans.
|
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added Post by NancyB on Feb 28th, 2010 at 12:25pm
Look I'm not trying to cause an argument here. What I'm trying to say, is as awful as it is to look at and breathe, the sewage is probably what you're going to get action on. That is not a local problem. If your on a well system you need to get you're water tested to make sure it hasn't been contaminated. Everyone down stream from you is at risk of getting sick, from kids just playing in a puddle to someones well water. Wishing you well and hope you get some action soon!

It's horrible that they can do all of this and your hands are so tied. |

Title: Re: Damnit~pics added~new ones! Post by deltadarlin on Feb 28th, 2010 at 7:54pm
Unfortunately, there are no restrictions, per se. The biggest thing is that they are burning what would be considered *non-household* items. Burning garbage is a bit of a health hazard as it is, but when you throw all the other crap on top of it, you have a bigger problem.
I'm hoping that everything adds up enough to get somebody to do something. If we haven't heard anything in a few weeks, I'll be on the phone to my senator/representatives. Sometimes the wheels of justice are slow, sometimes they come to a grinding halt and then, there are those times, when you look in the mirror and realize the wheels of justice left skid marks on your face :P. |

I'm betting you and Jimbo get something figured out to get this slum cleaned up. |
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added~new ones! Post by deltadarlin on Mar 1st, 2010 at 8:20am
Jimbo went back up there last night because they had a huge fire burning. He tried to talk to the wife and her husband (renters, not owners) and explain to them the toxins that they are polluting the air with. Don't think he made much progress. Both of them seem to be completely clueless. The wife said that Mary (the owner) told her to get what she might find useful and then burn the paper. Unfortunately, they are burning everything. It looks like they burned a damned computer moniter.
IF they test the soil around that trailer, the are probably going to find dioxins in the soil (and it stays around for years). Geez, this sucks! Again, the trailer with all the garbage has no *humans* living in it. Some of the other trailers do (and that is a whole 'nuther post). |

Can't think like a ch'er, cos' I'm not one ;). The problem is that when they are burning crap, it really only affects 2 other houses. All the others are far enough apart that it doesn' affect them. I'm guessing that the toxic smoke is not really affecting those two houses either. I have migraines and this frickin' smoke tends to trigger them. I live in a really rural area and sad to say, most of my neighbors now are not people that I'd choose to live next too. We've been here for almost 30 years and it used to not be like this. |
Title: Re: Damnit~pics added~new ones! Post by NancyB on Mar 1st, 2010 at 9:38am
No - that's not what I mean. Your house isn't the only house that has someone burning toxic waste next to them. If someone is doing that next to you, you can bet that somone else is doing it too, and there are other people just as frustrated as you are. There are, more than likely, people in your county, area, whatever that are having the same problem. Search them out and band together. The more people you can find the better.

Although I understand what you are trying to say, it's just not possible. This parish is huge and the population is spread out to say the least. It's just not possible to do what you're talking about. Hell they won't even do anything about illegal dumping.
