Dugout Dick was featured in Cort Conley's book, "Idaho Loners: Hermits, Solitaries, and Individualists", published in 1994, along with Sylvan Hart (Buckskin Bill) and a dozen others who lit out for the territories and lived a solitary life.  Well worth reading, if you happen to see a copy.

"Cougar Dave" Lewis lived beside Big Creek on the western side of the River of No Return in the 30's.  Didn't like cougars, apparently, and hunted them relentlessly.  I've spent a good bit of time in that area, and know it pretty well.

One of them, (Bill Parrott, I believe) lived in the Selway/Bitterroot country for over twenty years before anyone ever knew he was there.

Far as I know, Zimmerman was the last of his kind.  But who knows...there may be others up there.   ;)

Best,

George
