Title: Goodbye Grandfather Oak
Post by deltadarlin on May 15th, 2010 at 10:16am
Grandfather Oak was badly damaged by winds a few days ago.  This pin oak is at least 130 years old and quite possibly over 150 years old.  There are some rootlings around the base and we plan to transplant them.

The tree has grown around this cow skull (we put it up there for Halloween many years ago).

A few more random pictures.  This lily was transplanted from my mother-in-laws' yard after she died.  Of course, Graybaby had to *help* take the pictures.

And last but not least, our little garden.  We'll have squash by next week and tomatoes and cucumbers shortly thereafter.

This place was an old home site and when Jimbo was getting the garden ready, he dug up all sorts of neat stuff.

What a shame.....the oak was beautiful

Looks like Kitty likes flowers.... :)

Can't believe how far ahead of us you all are.  We dare not plant 'tender' plants yet.  We had a freeze early this week.

Love the pictures...thanks   :)

How sad to lose such a wonderful tree. Glad you have some saplings to let it continue.

I'm sorry about the tree, but if you want to get rid of any of that homestead stuff, especially any ceramic shards, feel free to contact me for my address . . . . :)

Sorry about your pin oak. I have one too that was planted in 1965 in my back yard. The thing was six feet 45 years ago. Now it has to be as least 150 feet tall. It's too big for my little yard and I'd give a lot to get rid of it. Lots of branches "droop" on these things and die. The wind dumped some pretty heavy junk from it in my yard last weekend. I've been told that it would run well more than $1,000 to pull it down.

They are about the fastest growing tree there is and in the right setting...such as yours, they are pretty things.

Nice pictures kid.
