Anybody going to watch the World Cup and root the USA on?
We face England on Saturday at 2pm ET. |

After thirty years as an official (qualified up to semi-pro and pro lines), I plan to.

I will watch some matches.
Belgium is not in the world cup, we have had bad team management over the past few years :( But I'll watch and enjoy some matches, to me... may the best team win :) |

Soccer holds no interest for me. Sorry.

I used to have more than 40 TV channels, now every one is polluted with this silly shit kicking. I can't even watch the weather forecast, they sure as hell include the weather in South Africa.

Well, the one thing that has annoyed me so far in this World Cup is those damn horns they blow in S. Africa.

I watched that game and couple others... :) But only the ones with my favourite countries playing and they are England, Brazil, the Netherlands and Argentina.
Maybe one of these years I can cheer for team Finland! ;) Sanna |

You got a great result today Chad... I don't know why the 3rd was disallowed it looked a perfect good goal to me. You should pull off a result against the Algerians to go through to the next round. I seen them in Dublin last month and they were brutal, we beat them 3 and it could have been 6 or 7.

Fingers crossed here for New Zealand taking on Italy tonight. Having got their first ever point at a world cup a few days ago a win would be just amazing!

It's not just me, the whole country is over the moon. NZ have only ever qualified once before and that was in 1982, so to even qualify was a big achievement. Then to get that first draw was another step forward but drawing against the defending champions was something quite special. As long as NZ don't lose their next game they are quite likely to go through to the next round, unlike some big names. For many of the players in the team, football isn't even their day job, so you can imagine how they must be feeling like they are in a dream playing the likes of Italy. |
Title: Re: World Cup Post by sandie99 on Jun 23rd, 2010 at 1:48am
Mike,
I can imagine a bit of what you and the rest are feeling. For us Finns that just a dream, but maybe one year... I bet we'd get all excited in the very same way! Good luck for your country. Sanna :) |

New Zealand are now heading home after a draw against Paraguay. The dream is over. :(
However they will be, apart from the eventual winners, the only undefeated team in the competition. Not bad for a country with only 25 professional players! |

Title: Re: World Cup Post by Chad on Jun 28th, 2010 at 12:54pm
I think England's momentum may have changed if that blind ref would have seen Lampard's obvious goal before the half. They were striking and completely controlling the game at that moment. What a buzz kill.

There seems to have been many, many issues where referees have missed things or have been taken in by things like diving. Being a world cup, the referees have been taken from all over the world, with the result that many matches have been under the control of relatively inexperienced referees. It is also amazing that football does not make use of any technology other than the human eye to make the decisions. It doesn't even make use of replays from TV that for things like the England "goal" would have made it very, very obvious that a goal really was scored. Is it time for football to join the 21st century? |
Title: Re: World Cup Post by Chad on Jun 29th, 2010 at 7:51am
I 100% agree with you Mike. The games I watched... I saw the US get robbed of a goal and now England.
I believe instant replay is now going to be pushed due to these issues especially during the World Cup. Here in the states, the National Hockey League sends video to Toronto, Canada to review goals in slow motion. The refs lets the league decide and then they announce if it's a goal or not. They need to do something like this in football/soccer as well. |
Title: Re: World Cup Post by jayhedges on Jun 29th, 2010 at 9:00am
Agree instant replay for goals only. But the refs did not affect who advanced. The US just ran out of gas agains a Ghanaian team that was playingon adrenilin for their continent. Donopvan is now our star and I hope they keep Bradley for 2014. He put together a good team (but needs a finisher) My sonshut down Robbie Findlay for 90 minutes witout a shot when he played for Oregon St three years ago. You need more than just speed in this game. Yu need touch and ability to finish. We wer two players away from the senis and will do better in 2014. I pick Argentina this year.

World cup?
I never heard of that race before. Is it an oval or a road course? Wait, I think I heard it playing while I was at the bank. I thought the engines sounded like mosquitoes. It must be a race of all rice burners. Paul |

Poli, I wish luck to Spain against those German's.
They're on a mission. Spain isn't ranked #1 for nothing though. I think the Dutch will take Uruguay though. It's going to be two great semi games. |
Title: Re: World Cup Post by Arde on Jul 6th, 2010 at 11:38am
I've watched several of the World Cup games because, you know, 57 channels and nothing on. I like the international competition aspect, but can't really get into the game itself. Seems to me like watching a basketball game where no one can score a basket.
I admit that it would probably help if I knew the rules of the game. Watched a game where they disallowed a goal because of an off sides. They ran a replay with a still frame at the critical time, and said, see the off side? All I could think was.. no. I'll probably watch some more, but still be in puzzlement. Anyway, Enjoy |
Title: Re: World Cup Post by Chad on Jul 6th, 2010 at 11:52am
Offsides in soccer is similar to the blue line in ice hockey except the blue line always changes in soccer.
The last striker who has possession is the imaginary blue blue. Once he kicks the ball forward, it's free game to any player on the same team. Now, if those players go past the last defender on the opposing team before that man in possession kicks the ball, it's offsides. That's when the line judges flag goes up. |

Thanks, I think I got that.
