Yes, one can see it coming, and one generally gets warning sirens in advance, and one generally knows the conditions which spawn tornadoes and can make arrangements and take precautions.

They don't suddenly shake ones house and the ground under ones feet without warning.  I'll stick with the occasional tornado, thank you very much.

Glad you're all okay, Potter.

I had weird dreams about last night where a bunch of tornadoes wre all lined up down the side of the street and I tune in the ch.com and get pics!!

Glad the tornado didn't take a direct path towards you, Potter.  I've seen a few in my lifetime and they are a powerful sight to behold!

I have seen live fotage of your tornado Potter and I am glad to hear that you are ok.  I think tornados are cool to and exciting.  I saw a live one in person a couple weeks ago.  I was a few miles away but had perfect view of it the whole time.  I agree with Pat you have advanced watches and warnings and know to be on the lookout for them when conditions are favorable.  Plenty of time most the time to get in the basement and hide.

Had one around here lately, usually in June, too.  The very ominious dark cloud action lets you know something is happening somewhere near, but didn't see anything.  The atmosphere feels weird, birdies hunker down quiet.

Glad I didn't, that's a little too close!  Good pics, Slim.    :)

They just showed Billings Montana on our TV news tonight.  The roof came right off a local arena.  That's scary stuff!

Glad to hear that all is well in Potterville! ;)

We've had Tornado warnings and touchdowns all around us tonight, but it passed by us, thank Heaven.

Lots of damage in this area.

I do NOT like tornados, too damned unpredicatable.

Glad ya'll were safe, but shucks, that was a *baby* tornado.

Here's a picture of his daddy (the one that hit Tallulah LA, crosses the MS and left a path of destruction through MS).

That particular tornado destroyed a plant and numerous houses in Louisiana. "The most active day was April 24th, with 77 preliminary tornado reports, mainly in the Southeast. The deadliest tornado of 2010, and first EF–4 of the year, occurred on this day, when a tornado touched down in eastern Louisiana and tracked eastward into Mississippi with a 149-mile (240 km) track and a maximum width of 1.75 miles (2.8 km). This track length is one of the longest tornado track on record. Yazoo and Holmes counties were particular hard hit when the tornado reached its maximum strength with estimated winds of 170 mph (274 km/hr). Across the two states at least 10 people were killed and 146 injured."

This shows the track and ratings of the tornado.

Went through this one when I was a kid, living in northern Indiana.  Although I was only twelve at the time, I'll never forget it.

We didn't get hit, but the storms were all around us.

Yeah, I guess it does. LOL... Joe and I seem to be the only ones who don't fear the earth moving, so I decided to look up some statistics.

In 2008,  110  people were killed in Tornados in the U.S. , not to mention the destruction of buildings, homes, crops etc.

In 2008     there were no fatalities from Earthquakes in the U.S. and very minor damages.

What about the other years, and what about the rest of the world (including, I'd have to say, any victims of tsunamis that resulted from tectonic plate shifts)?

You don't have to answer that. I merely pose the questions because I work day in and day out with statistics. You can get them to imply just about anything you want.

I believe it was Mark Twain (who attributed the quote to Benjamin Disraeli) who said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

The footage of that was crazy. Nice pics Potter. Glad you are okay. There is a video of the storm after it hit in Billings closer to Pompeys Pillar. Wish I was able to post it. (at work so can't) Google "storm chaser at Pompeys Pillar" if someone would post it, it is amazing!  It may have been little but this stuff just doesn't happen here in Montana. :)

Sorry Linda, but I HAD to post this:

The number of earthquake-related fatalities across the world was much higher in 2008 than in recent years.
About 88,070 deaths resulted from earthquake activity worldwide during 2008, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and confirmed by the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This is the largest number of deaths from earthquakes in a year since 2004.

And:
There were 2,192 tornadoes reported in the United States[1]  (of which 1,691 were confirmed), with 125 confirmed fatalities.[2]  This made 2008 the deadliest year in that country since 1998. Nine other fatalities have been reported elsewhere in the world; three in France, two each in Bangladesh and Poland, and one each in Russia and China. With 1,691 confirmed tornadoes, 2008 ranked as the second most active US tornado season on record; only 2004 had more tornadoes with 1,817 confirmed tornadoes.

What I find interesting is the seeming correlation between heavy tornado and earthquake years . . . .

Lies, damned lies, and statistics . . . :o

Bottom line is meteorologists can tell me a tornado is in the area. I can see a tornado coming. I can run from a tornado. I can obtain safe shelter from a tornado.

None of the above applies when it comes to the earth moving vigorously under my feet.

LOL, that's o.k. Pat.  I decided to just do  a quick check on only the U.S. earthquakes and Tornadoes and just picked one year, 2008 and that was what I found.   I realize that countries like China and surrounding areas have way more destruction and loss of lives due to earthquakes.

Interesting link with Ohio having had at least 120 earthquakes since 1776.

GeoNet analyses, locates and archives over 15,000 earthquakes each year within the New Zealand region. For the over 250 significant earthquakes felt in the New Zealand region each year, GeoNet provides the location and magnitude of the events within 30 minutes of their occurrence.

Where I live, Auckland, we don't get too many earthquakes, but we are in the middle of a volcanic field, with over 50 volcanic vents / peaks - START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE.

Luckily it's about 600 years since the last one erupted, so one is probably overdue.

We've a few active volcanoes too. Two of them have ski fields on them and I know people who have been skiing when eruptions have been on.

There is one, Taupo, that is hopefully extinct as it is a super volcano (START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE). The last time it erupted, about 2200 years ago, it turned the sky red over Rome and China! The ash covered about 20,000 square kilometers of land, with over 120 cubic kilometers of material ejected from the volcano and a quarter or so was ejected in the first few minutes!

New Zealand is pretty active geologically, but we also get the odd tornado too, but nothing like the ones pictured in this thread.

We live in an amazing world!
