Title: Oxygen question Post by MattyAA on Jun 22nd, 2010 at 8:41am
I was wondering if anyone could fill me in with how much O2 costs in USA just so I can compare if my own country tries to rip me off.
Just for instance Linde Gas in here offers me E-tank rent per month withouth air flow regulator for 20 PLN which is 5$ more or less and oxygen refill costs 114 PLN which is 28.5$. It is medical oxygen and they want me to have prescription from doctor aswell as they say max 15 litres although I am guessing if i buy my own regulator it can go up to 50-60. In USA I read that you guys buy often from Welders but is it also medical oxygen and how much for it? I am guessing there isnt one in Poland where I live. So far I borrowed some o2 from coal mine that friend works in from the medi-point, but I don't want to bother him too much especially it is hard to explain why for he gets that o2, so I try to obtain my own set while I get relief meanwhile from borrowed setup. |

Depends on the kind of insurance you have, if you have insurance. My previous policy charged $10/month as a prescription regardless of how many tanks I went through. My current policy decided this comes under "durable medical equipment" and not prescriptions, so I'm charged $40/month, again irrespective of how often I have the tanks filled. |

I think in Poland medical care isnt insurance oriented we have this national medical fund but it sucks big time, and doesn't cover oxygen, in Poland you don't even have imitrex injects covered, you pay full 100 bucks or whatever it costs :/

When I was paying out of pocket it was $4.25 a month to rent each E-Tank. then $11-$14 each time I took it in for a refill. I bought my own regulator off E-Bay.

Matt, I'm not sure about the med. o2. But for welding o2, The rental on an M tank is $50. a year and $13 to refill.
Not sure about the E tanks, cause I fill my own at home from the M tank, which I own. You could save yourself some money by buying your own E tanks off ebay. There is a store there that sells them with an in date hydro test, and a new valve for 19.99 FREE SHIPPING. I bought two of them. Not sure if that ships around the globe tho. The company is GTS.WELCO. I found them by searching for "oxygen cylinder" |

I'm sure there are lots of welders in Poland. ;)
If push comes to shove, you can always say you're using it to raise fish, or keep minnows alive longer for bait. Or that a friend is teaching you how to weld, but you won't need a tank of acetylene because he said all you needed to get was a tank of O2. Be creative. |

The average home care oxygen cost delivered is $30 for an M-size (3995 liter) oxygen cylinder and $20 for an E-size cylider (708 liters). Medicare/Medicaid covers roughly $200 a month for total home oxygen therapy expense and as the largest payer here in the US, they set the market cost. This cost also includes regulator and mask so the actual oxygen content cost will be less.
These costs can vary due to some screwed up legislation mandating competitive bidding for oxygen content costs under Medicare and Medicaid. This has driven many of the smaller local Mom & Pop Home Care companies out of business meaning the big companies frequently need to drive greater distances to deliver oxygen cylinders to the home. Although the oxygen cost may be lower from these larger companies, they are allowed to collect higher fees to cover delivery expense. Most folks find that cash pickup at an oxygen fill facility is the least expensive. As others have pointed out, Welder's O2 is slightly cheaper but some European countries have even more stringent laws regarding use of welder's O2. I usually get my oxygen cylinders from Linde or Pangas when I'm on travel in Germany or Switzerland and AGA when I'm in Norway. As far as BOL is concerned, Dr. Halpern is working on a Phase II study of BOL but I don't have any current details or dates. I suspect coming up with the required funding for this study is the long pole in the tent at this point. Hope this helps. Take care, V/R, Batch |

Thank you all for answers, I will try to look around.
Though welder oxygen not sure about one in Europe, I thought it contains some other things in and isn't for human use. Will research and see what I can get, indeed welders o2 is cheaper somehow and I guess doesnt need recipe from doctor. |

Inthe USA the oxygen in welding tanks....and the oxygen in medical tanks.....literally comes out of the same BIG tank. The difference:
Medical oxygen tanks are completely vacuumed out before they are refilled....and have stricter visual interior inspections then the welding tanks do. Joe |

How, exactly, do they accomplish that? Not trying to be a smarty-pants - just can't visualize it. |

High pressure cylinders that are used multiple times—as most are—can be hydrostatically or ultrasonically tested and visually examined every few years. In the U.S., hydrostatic/ultrasonic testing is required either every five years or every ten years, depending on cylinder and its service. From Wikypedia...couldn't find the exact stats on 02 tanks. But they pull the top off!
