I know of Dr Goadsby and the team in the UK - but who are the experts in the States? I am looking in particular in the East Coast (preferably Boston) area. Any suggestions?

thanks,
-peter-

It's a bit more of a travel but Dr. Todd Rozen is in Pa. and right now his waiting list is pretty long a few months, I am currently on it.

LOCATING HEADACHE SPECIALIST

1. Search the OUCH site (button on left) for a list of recommended M.D.s.

2. Yellow Pages phone book: look for "Headache Clinics" in the M.D. section and look under "neurologist" where some docs will list speciality areas of practice.

3.  Call your hospital/medical center. They often have an office to assist in finding a physician. You may have to ask for the social worker/patient advocate.

They will send a list of M.D.s for your state.I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder") which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician.

Since this is a new program, the initial listing is limited and so it should be checked each time you have an interest in locating a headache doctor.

A large hospital chain located around here had a separate extension called Chronic Headache and Migraine Institute located nearby.  It didn't require any referral so I just went and after some pre-paperwork and a doctor assessment, walked away with scripts for verap, oxygen, and some trex.  I'm sure Boston has similar, which might be found by what Bob posted.

No opinion about having the most experience, but the doc knew clusters.

Dr. Markley at New England Regional Headache Center in beautiful Worcester.  I've been a patient for 8-9 years.  He knows his clusters.

Good luck,
Dennis

Hi,

I am waiting to see a head ache specialist / neurologist, Dr Paul Rizolli, Director at the John R. Graham Headache Center in Jamaica Plain, just outside of Boston. He was highly recommended. He is associated with Brigham & Woman's Hospital and Faulkner Hospital. You shouldn't have any problem finding him. Waiting list is also a few months.

Good Luck!  ;)

We found Dr. Rizzoli @ Faulkner June 09. John R. Graham Headache Center specializes in Headaches and it was a blessing to get an appointment for my husband. They have changed our life. There is a no nonsense approach, no dancing around what "might" be wrong, great facility, they get down to the business of helping the patient and "are in it for the long hall." Highly recommend Dr. Rizzoli. Best to all and PFDAN.

Got a tip to see Dr Markley at the New England Regional Headache Center - best doc I have seen so far for CH. My god, how refreshing to speak with someone who 'gets it'.

Thanks for the tip, Dennis.

You're welcome, Peter.

I'm glad you saw him.  He certainly does get it, doesn't he?

Let me know next time you're coming over.  I live in Holden, next town over from Worcester.

Hope you go pain-free soon.

Dennis
