Very true, and not the only oil spill in that area, they're more common than known.

Louisiana Wellhead Bursting Out Oil & Gas After Collision

Tuesday July 27, 2010 15:51:12 EDT

A state-owned wellhead in southeastern Louisiana is leaking up to 20 feet of oil into the air Tuesday, the New York Times reports, and is the third leak in the area since BP Plc's (NYSE:BP) April 20th Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The well is about 65 miles away from New Orleans in Barataria Bay, and reportedly burst after a dredge barge that was being pushed in the bay by a tugboat collided with the wellhead.

It is not certain how much oil has spilled from the wellhead so far, but a local news channel reported that the wellhead was mostly oozing gas later in the day.

Even here in MI we have very large oil spills.

Oil spill near Kalamazoo River causes stench, mess
Obama briefed; Granholm tours, calls for more resources

BATTLE CREEK -- A phalanx of government officials and private clean-up experts raced Tuesday to protect water supplies in western Michigan after nearly 20,000 barrels of crude oil from a failed underground pipeline escaped into the Kalamazoo River.

By late Monday, the downstream edge of the spill had reached Ft. Custer State Recreation Area, between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Crews were using booms, skimmers and other devices to keep the oil from reaching Morrow Lake, an impoundment of the river east of Kalamazoo.

Oil-soaked waterfowl and dead fish were observed in tainted parts of the river. A wildlife rescue team will set up today.

The 30-inch-wide pipeline is owned by Houston-based Enbridge Energy Partners, which said it had shut down the pipe, but didn't know a cause for the spill.

The spilled oil -- enough to cover a football field to a depth of more than 2 feet -- had been bound for refineries in Detroit, Toledo and Sarnia, Ontario. Industry experts said the pipeline closure wouldn't disrupt supplies or affect gas prices.

The Kalamazoo River drains into Lake Michigan about 60 miles west of the spill. State officials warned the public to stay away from the river and not to use river water for livestock or crops.

Battle against oil goes 24/7

The spill of about 840,000 gallons of crude oil ...

Personally I don't think BP should be allowed to drill on our shores...but that's just me.  ;)

As one personally effected by this mess i'll say the lawyers and politicians are cleaning up in $$$$$$! This whole mess makes me sad to see what America has evolved into lately. EPA needs to revoke the P from their title. DEP reissues EPA data thus is redundant. Water isn't tested. Air is dirty from fires. How much dispersant is dumped in FED waters 3 miles from shore? Is the Oil "Hot"? Has my local BP Rep been swimming...Meeting adjourned. Who's reg's prevent volunteer's from cleanup? The Reg's!
Meeting Adjourned! True all True, I swear.
SAD beyond belief. We now got a Huge Toxic Pool open for bathing. Human Trials Underway for Benezine,Toulene,Napathalene,Chrysene and about 25 others. None have been done before!
Samples of air and water show traces but What's my Absorbtion rate?
EPA says Oil has Half Life of 1 week. Their own site says in  regards to Hot Oil....Google yourself please
Radioactive Oil & go to EPA site.
Amazing!
I'm just over a cycle and swear this crap will bring them on again!
Beyond Forgiveness what Pulic employees and corporations are allowed to get away with these days.
God Speed Everyone.

Below is an opinion article, which is a bit of a read that could be criticized as an outsider's view ignoring the realities of employment, but looks at Louisiana's relationship with oil and may simply offer some insight if you're from the state.

Despite oil's abundance in the area, there is the underlying question of what oil has benefited LA overall and the thought an absence of caring toward the state may seem to be suspiciously apparent since oil can also jeopordize other jobs in its natural setting for a tourist and fishing industry.

The dollars involved being reaped in oil and going somewhere make it appear business will continue as usual despite whatever consequences to the state.

It would be good to see oil's influence reduced, and that be a less naive dream.

My rambling here just an emotional opinion, though.  MI is beginning to come through the depths of these times, needing perseverence, and seeing a what appears to be a tougher road for LA somehow instills an empathic something to presently share to compel preserving what LA has been endowed with and its attractively original people.

Oil spills. Poverty. Corruption. Why Louisiana is America's petro-state.

BP Will Reportedly Have To Pay Record Fine For Safety Violations At Texas Refinery

Thursday August 12, 2010 13:47:25 EDT

BP (NYSE:BP) will have to pay a record fine for safety violations at its refinery in Texas City, Texas, according to a Reuters report, which cited the U.S. Department of Labor.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis was set to announce the fine in a conference call Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for BP declined to comment on the matter.

BP to pay record fine for Texas refinery problems

Aug 12, 2010 ... HOUSTON,

(Reuters) - BP Plc has agreed to pay a record $50.6 million fine for safety violations from a deadly 2005 explosion at its troubled Texas City, Texas refinery, U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said Thursday.

BP also agreed to allocate $500 million to fix safety problems at the refinery and accepted a set program of safety inspections and review by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

"The size of the fine rightly reflects BP's lack of regard for worker safety," Solis said in a Thursday afternoon conference call.

OSHA will continue to seek $30 million in fines for new safety violations found by government inspectors at the refinery.

BP's global head of refining said the company would work with OSHA to improve refinery safety.

"BP has a stated goal to become a leader in process safety and we look forward to working collaboratively with OSHA to achieve an injury-free workplace in our operations," said Ian Conn, global head of refining.

In October, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration slapped BP with a record $87.4 million in proposed fines for safety violations at the Texas City refinery, which was the site of a deadly explosion in 2005.

In the October announcement, Solis said old and new safety violations found by OSHA at BP Texas City, the nation's third largest refinery, "could lead to another catastrophe" like the 2005 explosion that killed 15 workers and injured 180 others.

BP defended its efforts to improve safety at the 465,000 barrel per day (bpd) refinery, located about 50 miles south of downtown Houston.

The company also filed an appeal of the fine.

Last week, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott sued BP for a 40-day release of excess pollution including carcinogenic benzene in April and May at the refinery.

The company was also hit with a $10 billion federal class action lawsuit earlier this month for the April-May pollution, which BP reported to state regulators.

Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who filed the class-action suit, which had over 12,000 plaintiffs, welcomed the Labor Department's action.

"We believe the fine to be appropriate and welcome the government's efforts in our quest to force this British company to comply with U.S. and Texas Law," Buzbee said. "BP's record rivals the worst in U.S. history."

Last year, BP pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges in the 2005 explosion and paid a $50 million fine.

["could lead to another catastrophe"]

Another catastrophe, as in BP's unfortunate fate of being involved with the April 2010 Gulf deaths, injuries, and spill?
