Title: Concussion
Post by Mike NZ on Aug 29th, 2010 at 1:07am
I know this isn't directly related to CHs, but since people here seem to know a lot about how our brains work (or don't) I thought I'd ask.

I'm having fun and games with my insurance company who are trying to deny a claim I'm making for some time off as a result of a concussion. What they have jumped on is a report from a neurologist who said that I've got the symptom of post concussion syndrome but they don't understand the mechanism by which I got them.

So my questions are:

1. Can you get post concussion syndrome from anything other than a concussion? (As far as I know, no)

2. Can you get a concussion from anything other than the head being able to move back and forth or rotated or exposed to loud noise? Mainly I'm looking for can a concussion be caused by anything like an infection or similar? (As far as I know, no)

3. Does a concussion always show up on a CT scan? (As far as I know, no)

4. Is there anything else that is an illness that has the same symptoms as post concussion syndrome that would not show up in blood tests, spinal tap, x-rays, CT scan and MRI scan? (As far as I know, no)

I'm covered if I can show that the cause was an accident but not if it was an infection or gradual wear and tear type cause.

I'm seeing the neuro again next week so hoping to encourage them to write a more accurate report that will make the insurance company understand things better (and pay my claim).

Any help is very welcome.

Wish I could help you... I've got headaches from Post Concussion Syndrome, but never had a problem with the ins. on it (don't even remember if I had insurance when I had the accident).

My biggest problem is figuring out which type of headache is hitting (I also have migraines as well as CH -- all my problems are in my head!), so I have to figure out which one to treat.

Maybe your neuro can shed some light on it... Good luck... :-*

My neuro did shine light on it, confirming my understanding.

I'd rather not write what I think about insurance companies and their efforts to deny coverage when someone is clearly entitled to coverage.

And it will save the moderators having to censor it too (I like being nice to moderators as I moderate a forum elsewhere).
