Title: Guseppi...the One-armed bike rider....
Post by QnHeartMM on Aug 30th, 2010 at 6:04pm
Well Joe is going to be one-armed for awhile. He was dropping off the van for service and rode his bike home. Went down a side street just in time for some woman to open her car door. Ass over tea-kettle up over the door of her car CRASH! Right in front of his brother Paul's house.

Ambulance ride, back board, neck brace, xrays...pain meds....turns out his shoulder has soft tissue damage and some alignment problems. Have to wait for the swelling to go down before we know more.

It's his right side and he's right-handed. He might be a little slow on the boards for a few days.

When I first saw the pic, I thought that you had bought some overalls after wearing mine but I see I was wrong.

Christy says that you are in quite a bit of pain but I suppose it could have been worse.

Hang in there Sarge and heal up for March.

Love you bro.....

Aw Sarge, you're killin me!  I'm sad for you and giggling all at the same time.  I would never wish you harm but jeeeeeeez, over a car door?  You never do anything by half, do ya?

Love to both of you - you're gonna need it.

So sorry to hear this news and to see that "oh so pitiful" picture Joe!  Yikes!

So, did the police charge the person who opened the car door.

I work in accident benefits for auto insurance so these kinds of things always interest me.  Hopefully you have filed a claim for benefits?

Take good care - and heal fast!

Carol

Ouch, that doesn't look or sound like it was too much fun.

I hope it fixes itself quickly and the pain fades fast too.

Hey Joe?  You know that bullet proof bubble the Pope is in when he is out among the masses?   Maybe you should look into one of those for your cross-country bike ride next year.

Laughing with ya Joe, not at ya.

Thanks for the well wishes! For those of you I haven't told....I have modified my cross country bike journey plans. I am no longer going solo, going with a group of 14 people, organized by Adventure Cycling. Negatives are I won't be able to do any side trip visits. Up side is when I do something stupid like this I'll have someone else there to assist me. Christy liked that!!! ;)

The not driving Christy nuts part is the key to my happiness!! ;D

The poor young lady who opened her car door was about 26 with a load of toddlers she was dropping off at pre school...and the poor thing was just mortified by what she'd done! The officer doing the crash investigation is a friend of mine and I told him I had no interest in having the kid cited. She has insurance so all my bills will get paid! ;)

High School Gazzette

In the first week of a new school year, sophmore Rich Kimble reported his homework stolen on the way to school, saying a one-armed bike rider snatched it.  He now feels he's a fugitive of justice and says he'll look for this rider until the end of the semester to clear his name.  Seven others arrived in class the following day with the same story.
Last year several students investigated a mysterious, fog-shrouded yacht named IT'S ALL MINE OUCH, leaving their homework aboard.  Docked briefly in San Diego, it was never seen again.

Sorry to hear, Joe.  :(   I've seen some careless door-opening and been watchful myself, I see she was very distracted.  Dangerous bad break.

Ah Ruthie I love your guts!

Here's the Joe report:  He had a pretty good night sleep and didn't take any pain meds after the bedtime dose. Woke up feeling pretty good. Tender to the touch but way better than last night. SO MUCH better in fact that he has left me for a couple days to join his brethren for the annual High Holy of Holy days (Annual dove opener). He can't shoot this year, so he'll be on the sidelines with his brother (the one that just had surgery who also can't hunt).

So the two of them will be shooting their rubber-band guns at the dove mobile that our friend made for the injured hunters!

Well hopefully we'll at least have some good pictures.

And try not to drive Christy crazy.  You men can be such BABIES! :P

Bad things do happen to strange good people. You sound better though. It's hard to keep you down, ain't it?

I showed this to Caleb and he's ready to come "protect" his buddy Sgt. Joe.

Joe I KNOW you're hurting, but thanks for showing Caleb what CAN happen... I've been harping on being careful on his bike and he tells me he knows what he's doing.... NOW he SEES what CAN happen (and he thinks you are Superman).

Christy... bless you... you take care of our Joe.. (or stay out of the house - whichever comes first :)).

Luv you both...  :-*

My mother always told me that if I couldn't serve as a shining example, I could serve as a horrible warning.

I think Joe's serving in the latter category for awhile . . . . . :o

Hey Barbara - here's a lesson for Caleb: Joe was just doing an "errand" with the bike, as opposed to going for a ride. He looked at the helmet and thought "I don't need that" and then probably thought about it again, and put it on. Given the fact that when he went over the car and landed on his head....and BROKE the helmet.....I'd say the helmet was a good thing to have.

SO the lesson for Caleb, NEVER get on the bike without a helmet.

Having been one of the first people at the scene of a motorbike accident when the rider came off at a bend, half demolishing a wall, I was amazed to see a huge hole about four inches across had been punched into his helmet but it didn't get as far as his skull. His leathers were badly scuffed in a few places too.

But he was alive, which he wouldn't have been if he didn't have his helmet on. Being shaken up, bruised and probably a few broken ribs wasn't too bad in comparison.

I was also amazed as nobody knew any first aid other than me, even when there were about 20 people standing around. A few people were saying things like 'put him in the recovery position' or 'take his helmet off' and 'don't take his helmet off'.

I was really pleased that I'd had some first aid training, even though he wasn't too badly hurt, it could have been vital given it took 20 or so minutes for an ambulance to get to the accident as it was well out in the countryside.
