Title: Just gotta brag a "little".... Post by BarbaraD on Sep 2nd, 2010 at 4:55am
As most of you know, my grandson, Caleb, moved in with me last April. He's ADHD and was having a LOT of trouble in school in LA (he was failing and had been written off as a "bad" kid by the school he was attending).
Well, we put him in school here in Linden and after two weeks, had a teacher conference and his teacher (a wonderful lady) said he was doing good, but was so far behind we'd probably have to hold him back a year. We worked with him BIG TIME and by the end of school, the teacher called us in and said with summer toutoring she thought he could be moved to third grade without a problem (he was making A's and B's by then). We did three days a week tourtoring this summer (he LOVED his tourtor). Tuesday night we had Meet the Teacher night (school has been going since the 23rd. Son and I went to meet the teachers and what we heard was amazing!! Seems Caleb is a "MODEL" student making A's, well behaved (ok, he's on medication, but still...) and they wish all the kids were as good as him. My darling son went into shock... It was like night and day from LA.. The teachers were giving out hugs (even the principal) and telling us what a great kid Caleb was and Buddy was just looking at them like they had the wrong kid... When we got to the car, Buddy just looked at Caleb and said, "What happened?" Caleb told him, "Daddy, I LOVE this school!" It's just amazing what a little "positive" reinforcement will do to a kid's ego.. (And Granny did look up his second grade teacher and give her a BIG hug... she was the turning point). Those of you who've met Caleb know he's a little ball of energy (the ADHD) and can be a handful, but the medication is working to a certain extent and he's settled down somewhat now, but this turn in school has just been amazing. He can't wait to get to school in the morning and has most of his homework done BEFORE he gets home in the afternoon. Anyhow, I just had to brag about my "genius" grandson.. :) right now he's teaching me all about plants and how to grow things (he's really into science right now and Granny NEEDS to know this stuff... ;)).. :-* |

Not everyone learns the same way. That gets lost in this cookie cutter society sometimes. For the most part, there are no "bad kids". Sometimes they just need a little more help finding the right path than others.
Good on ya Grammy! Sounds like Caleb has found the right path... -Dennis- |

Yea Caleb!!!
This is so good to read and so good to hear. Isn't it amazing what one or two really good teachers, and a family who really cares and takes an interest in a child's eduction can accomplish with any student, even the challenged ones. Bless our good teachers, and to Granny - job well done. Sandy |

Most people don't realize the ADD/ADHD is a symptom of higher intelligence. With stimulants to slow their brains down, and proper help in the classroom they can excel in the slow thinking world.
