Title: Depakote and mood swings
Post by painfulnoodle on Sep 23rd, 2010 at 10:34am
Has anyone noticed mood swings, either positive or negatively when taking Depakote? Is there any interaction between Depakote and anti-depressants like Zoloft?

My Dr. recently put me on Depakote, 500mg twice a day, and when I miss one, I seem to notice it pretty significantly ... either that or my depressing life is just getting me down! :(

Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

Most likely the Dep.--reported effect of this class of meds. Zoloft is pretty benign.

Your body may adjust to this effect with time. Suggest you ask your doc for guidance.

I have used depakote (and topamax). It isn't surprising that you experience mood swings on it. It can be used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder. Topamax can too. On both these meds I experienced positive mood stabilizing effects and also noticed negative effects on my mood if I missed a dose. I found depakote just messed with my moods but did not help the CHs.

Check this site.  I know Doc told me I was low.  Helps with fatigue and depression.
I thought I was feeling age , Now I think it was lack of D!

They say a healthy body uses 5000IU a day.  a lot!  Most
multiples give 400-800IU at most.  But read and research and
when you have insurance again have your level checked.

I haven't located any research to confirm this but based on notes from a recent medical conference It was recommended that the use of Depakote in treating CH be discontinued.  The recommedation came as a result of a very low success rate in succesfully treating CH patients with the drug in off-label trials.

I'll keep looking and will post confirmation if I can find any, but you may want to discuss this with your Doctor.
