Title: Nitric Oxide
Post by Callico on Oct 14th, 2010 at 10:00pm
I know that nitroglycerin is an instant trigger for CH, and that it is made in small amounts in the human body.  It also breaks down into Nitric Oxide which causes smooth muscle relaxation and blood vessel expansion.  It is the release of Nitric Oxide that Viagra generates for men with ED which I understand can also be a trigger for CH.  My question is this then, Could it be a development and release of NO that causes CH attacks?

This thinking was brought on by doing some reading on Dr Ignarro's work on NO and the cardiovascular system.  I'm looking for something to replace statins for cholesterol, but this is causing second thoughts about pursuing NO.

I don't recall having read anything about NO being involved with CH, but that means nothing.  Would one of you more learned ones please weigh in on this?

I may be barking up totally the wrong tree, but it made sense to me.  (Be warned)

Thanks much.

Jerry

Lots of other articles out there.

Other than the flushing effect, there really are no side effects and I've not had any problems while in cycle.

I'll crash in anyway, which of course won't help with your situation.   :)

We observed a higher phenotype frequency of this allele in our control group compared with rates in control groups of other studies, whereas the frequency in our patients was similar to that in controls from previous reports. Thus, we conclude that it is unlikely that genetic variations within the NOS genes contribute greatly to cluster headache susceptibility.

also same as abstract from: Analysis of Nitric Oxide Synthase Genes in Cluster Headache
Cephalalgia November 2002 22: 758-764,

Nitric oxide (NO) may participate in the mechanisms underlying vascular headaches, such as migraine and cluster headache ...

... but other factors are likely to render CH patients hyperresponsive to NO, and ultimately to cause the occurrence of pain and associated features.

a neurovascular model could be more precise considering some recent experimental and clinical research data as serotoninergic neuromediation involvement, nitric oxide one and a possible genetic predisposition.

Just curious, Neils...what part of "found" is "I wrote it myself"?

Best,

George

Hi

I just got a mail from Niels. He has been CH free for almost 2 years after taking 200 µg vitamin D3 and 500 mg magnesium chloride pr. day. Before starting supplementing he had about 140-200 CH days pr. year since 1990.  :)

Do you hear voices in your head?

Maybe he's been listening to an oldies station.  Wasn't it the Chi-Lites who sang "A Letter to Myself"?

Jerry

Edit to add:  If I take all that vitamin D plus walk three hours in the mid-day sun in Jan in Chicago, won't I overdose on Vitamin D??? :D

The answer is very simple. NO

George says he thinks it's worthwhile to save Neils's responses as quotes for posterity.  Neils has a tendency to make 'em go "poof" after the fact. Or at least Neils did when he was "Neils", "D-3", and "Haug".

Best,

George and me.

Sounds like a schitzophrenic convention going on here.  (Not that I can spell schitzophrenic, but me, myself and I are one)

Looks like Niels deleted his profile and all his posts again.  He does that.

Glad we saved some of his posts by quoting them.  History can be cool.   8-)

Best,

George
