Over the Thanksgiving holiday I was at my brother's house in northern IA where the temp got down in the low teens at night, and in the lower 30's during the day.  I had my E tank along in case of need, hoping to be able to handle anything with a 5hr Energy.  Of course it didn't work that way, so about 11 at night I went running out to my car in only pants and a t-shirt, grabbed the O2 and went running in to the bedroom out of sight to try to kill the beast.  After fumbling with the regulator trying to get it on the tank I was up to a hard 7 and rising before I could figure how to turn the thing on.  Amazing what happens to our cognitive skills when we are dancing, no?  I finally got the mask on my face with the O2 going at 25 lpm with that COLD oxygen and three minutes later I turned it off and was done with it.  I've NEVER aborted a shadow that quickly let alone a 7.  I think I'm going to start storing my tanks on my back porch for the winter, and may find an old freezer to store them in for the summer.  You might want to give it a try.

oh sorry allready did that one  :-[Murphys law dude just when you think it cant happen it will (something like that) just a small tip if i may. when i go anywhere, weekend break, visiting friends etc i take my O2 with me and as soon as i get there i connect it up ready to use. Dancing around with a regulator in one hand and your head in the other would have sent me into fits of laughter, obviously after the hit LOL

I've found the same thing before Jerry.  The only thing you have to be careful about is cold temps and the gasket seals on the tank.  If they shrink enough it'll cause the O2 to leak out.  I believe the folks at Linde Gas cautioned us about this a while back.

I can't imagine anything worse than going for my O2 and finding the tank dry.

Sorta reminds me of my daughter when she was little.  She had rotating stock of "blankies" available for use, and she required us to keep the spares in the freezer.  Whenever she needed a bit of quiet comfort time with a "blankie", she asked us to get her "a cold one".   ;)

Sounds just like the problem with the cold weather and an O ring that ended up destroying the Challenger space shuttle in 1986.

Bob Kipple (Kip) taught us how to make an O2 chilling rig many years ago. It has always been effective for me, but I stopped needing it when I went to really high flow. Essentially, you coil some tubing in a large thermos jug filled with ice. I found it to work best with aluminum or copper tubing and an ice/water slurry. My 9800 liter T tank lives in the garage which gets comfortably chilly when the outside temps drop low.

Texas and comfortably chilly!  What a combo!  Is that one day a year, or on both of them?   ;D

"Cold" is a strange thing with this strange affliction. Many use ice (or frozen peas :D) during a hit...I can't stand ice on my head, face, or neck...yet sticking my head in the freezer, in front of AC, breathing winter air, or a REALLY cold drink helps...or yup, no doubt, cold O2...

...and George...that brings back memories. I had a "green blankie"....Mom recovered it several times...the BEST part was burying my face into a cool...COOL friend.........

Thanks for the post, Jerry. Is it just me, or my tanks, cuz when I'm huffing hard and fast on high flow, the O2 gets really cold, and so does my line. I combo breathe through my nose and mouth and I agree, the extra cold seems to help. God bless! lance

Nothing to worry about here Lance, it's just physics in action. In extracting the oxygen from the tank you are letting it expand which takes energy with the energy taken from the tank / remaining oxygen which makes it cooler. It's just like how a fridge or freezer works.

Hey guys, I know ideally you should be storing gas tanks outside so that's a good idea in itself however with the freezer idea I'm not overly convinced.

Storing a pressurised canister of oxygen in an electric device just doesn't seem like a great idea to me.  Couple that with the refrigerant in the freezer and you could potentially have a giant explosion happening.  Obviously it's not likely but why take the risk?  I'd opt for another method of cooling your oxygen guys.  Stay safe  :)

It sux!!!! I have 6 empties in my garage that weren't drained by me...ugh but when it is cold it does seem to get the job done a bit quicker

Living in the Buffalo area, I keep my tanks in the basement, plenty cold down there.  I've been free now almost 2 years from the headaches and hoping for another 2 years. (but who counts)
