Just call me Scrooge. I really dislike this time of year. :-/

Sorry you feel that ways guys. For me and my family, it is one of the most joyous times of the year for many reasons. :)

I hear ya Jeannie. I fight the "Grinchies" every year.
We have nine family birthdays clustered around Christmas ($$$), my hubby works for Santa's biggest elf, most of our extended family has no idea what the season really means and thus are clueless and greedy, and people are just awful to each other in public - rude, nasty, clueless, and self absorbed. I like the idea of staying in hiding until January 1st. |

I have never really cared much for Christmas, even as a child. You are right, Pat. It seems that no one knows what it's about, really.
Jimi... Maybe you could send some of your Christmas spirit out to us! Jeannie |

Hmmmmm - may I join the Bah Humbug club? It's nice to know I'm not the only one!!!! No idea why - but it's just never been my favourite time of year. I've often thought a deserted island might be kind of nice for the month of December.

I think I may learn to enjoy it more once I retire a few years down the road. The @$$holes come out in droves this time of the year - at least in the shipping business.
If only I didn't hate most of the people I encounter.... ;D |

Last Sunday I went to the Church service of a friend of mine and the pastor played a video for us that he had come across.
The song was called "Where's the line to see Jesus." Apparently a young lad was with grandparents standing in a line to see Santa when he asked that question and his aunt wrote the song. Bit of a reminder of what it should be all about. |

You'd think I'd be a perfect candidate for a Scrooge but I come from Swedish stock. Swedes can get into really strange stuff this time or year. Too, other than lutefisk, most Swede Christmas eats are wonderful. It's too good to miss.

I agree with the distaste for the season, but I'm extremely grateful for the reason. It is easy to get depressed seeing all that goes on this time of year, and especially in the last few years since going chronic and undergoing some financial challenges, but I try to turn my attention to the purpose of the season that has nothing to do with all the commercialism. I put my focus on Easter, which required Christmas to make it happen. That changes everything.

Jeannie- I admit, I'm one of those Christmas addicts. I adore the holidays, and as a rule, am planning the next year as I am cleaning up the dishes from Christmas dinner!
My joy is over the family gatherings, finding that special gift for someone(rarely from a garishly decorated big box store)...listening to the music and seeing the glee in everyone's children. We stopped making it a commercial Christmas years ago, and enjoy being together more than anything. Gil( my husband) is in retail... he is the first to arrive to open the store on Black Friday, and the last in the store on Christmas Eve..so, at the very least... Christmas means my husband can rest. Gil is retiring in 2011... maybe next year, we'll take the family on a cruise for Christmas..... The rule is, make it what you WANT it to be- and if you don't want any part of it, make it disappear...... I wish you a very merry.............uhh.... Dec 25th- and all the best in the New Year to come! Cathi :-* |

Swedish Lutherans run around with mostly electric candles in their hair now but there are enough stubborn old Swedish martyrs in town to make it interesting.
Come to think of it, today is the day! Lingonberries make great preserves too. Charlie |

We celebrate the Lucia Day here in Finland, too. :)
Every year a young woman from a Finnish-Swedish family will be selected to be our Lucia and she will be crowned at Tuomiokirkko (Helsinki Cathedral) and will lead Lucia parade. :) My parents took me to see the parade when I was a child and it was lots of fun to see the Lucia, dressed in white. She used to have a crown with live candles, but these days her crown has electric candles, too. Much safer indeed! ;D Although Lucia Day is a bigger deal with Finnish-Swedish folkes, back in my junior high days all the girls from my class (we chose Swedish as first foreign language) got to be in Lucia parade in our school. One tall girl (back in here she doesn't have to be a blonde) was chosen to be Lucia and the rest of us followed her. I and my pal were the shortest girls, so we always entered the room right after Lucia. It was great! :) (We did carry live candles and you can probably imagine that our hands did have some burns after the parade!) I was planning to see the parade this year, but after a busy day I simply forgot. But maybe next year... :) Sanna |

What comes to Christmas, I love this time of year. :) I always have.
These days my immediate family (= my mother, my aunt, aunt's two daughters & their families) are too busy to get together like we used to, but Christmas Eve brings us together. There will be good food, laughter, good music, joy, and no rush to get anywhere. Old traditions, new memories, that's how it is. This year Esa will there for the second time. :) And my cousin and her husband will bring their baby boy, now a month old, with them, too. :) Sanna |

I come from an Italian immigrant background, and for us, Christmas was all about the kids, presents, church and a 7 course meal taking 6 hours on Christmas day just to complete. All my family was there. We've tried to keep this same tradition with our own 7 children and 13 grandkids. It's quite a day and we never forget the reason for the season. And remember, its was Dickens' Scrooge's transformation on Christmas Eve that prompted the abandonment of Bah humbug, and he learned to keep Christmas in his heart all year long. I pray this for myself, and for all of my CH family, and may we all be pain free in 2012. God bless! lance

Me, I'm having a ball .. a nine year old and a one year old... we're doing crafts and just enjoying the things we're doing.
The baby has opened about all the packages and we're "RE-WRAPPING" them with laughter. He just loves the boxes and the bright paper. Caleb loves making things for everyone and ornaments for the tree (it's not up to Martha Stewart standards, but it's OURS and we think it's beautiful). We have a giant tree at church and each family was asked to bring an ornament that was "them" (We go to a Cowboy Church.) Caleb and Granny came up with a camo/cowboy angel with a halo on top of his/her (we're not sure of the sex) cowboy hat. (It's made out of a light bulb). Cost - about 10 cents (we had a coffee filter and two eyes and a pipe cleaner involved) - time spent - priceless. Our school here in Linden STILL celebrates CHRISTMAS (not the holiday season). Caleb's class has a Christmas tree and everything... they still actually do a pagent with the Christ Child being born and everything (maybe not politically correct, but this is East Texas and we don't have to be). They actually sing the "OLD" Christmas songs about CHRIST. The school's theory - if someone doesn't like it - don't sing.. Now our house is decorated to the hilt -- my Idiot son got carried away (I think he's kin to the Griswalds) - He "designed" an outside decoration (he's really into hunting big time) a Browning emblem with a twist.... he gave the deer on it a RED nose... People are driving for miles just to see his creation... We're so proud of him.. :) But the kids are all excited and we've got "noise" things all over the house that sing different songs when you push buttons and the baby knows where all the buttons are and most of the time they're all going at once. This is what Christmas is all about to me... The kids and the looks on their faces... I don't spend a LOT of money - I make things thru the year and that's what people get from me - something homemade that I put my time and effort into. And I wish to each of you the merriest of Christmases this year. I'm planning to enjoy the heck out of it. Hugs BD :-* |

I love Christmas, always have. It is my favorite time of the year.
My grandparents had four daughters, and they produced 11 grandchildren. Every Christmas (no excuses!) the entire family came to Grandma and PopPop's house and stayed there for at least two to three days. Four bedrooms, one bathroom (unless you want to count PopPops toilet in the basement. People were sleeping on couches, three or four kids to a bed, and quilts and pillows on the floor. Christmas morning, all the adults got to go downstairs, light the tree, make the coffee, while all 11 of us had to wait at the top of the stairs, guarded by mean old Uncle Vaughn, until all the adults had their coffee, land Grandma had put the homemade breakfast rolls into the oven (she had started the turkey the night before). I continued that little tradition with my two daughters until they were 16 years old! Not down the stairs till the grown ups had their caffeine! My younger daughter hated having to be the only one stuck at the top of the stairs those last two Christmases until she hit "the age". Sorry - it's a tradition. Both my daughters are doing the same with their children- the tradition continues. My husband, Tarey began a tradition when our girls were toddlers. Daddy took his daughter out to lunch and shopped for her Christmas outfit. Just Daddy and daughter, one at a time - I was not allowed to come along. Both of my daughters are married now with daughters of their own (one each). Their daddies love this tradition and are doing it with their daughters - the tradition continues. I adore Christmas, and can't wait until this Saturday (18th), because due to work and the other side of the family (in-laws), plus a Christmas wedding, the 18th is the only day that we can all be together. My two precious and precocious granddaughters (both two years old), are coming to this Grandma and Grandpa's house. The stockings are hung! Yes, Christmas is big business for the retailers, and too many people spend more time and money worrying about what to buy to someone else. That's not important. Being with loved ones is, and remembering what Christmas really is: CHRISTmas. Sandy PS (sorry, this was long - just wanted to share) |

I have to take the kids to my in-laws without my husband because he has to work 2nd shift Christmas Eve. Either I'm going to hightail on out of there when the drama starts, or I'll cause some cyclonic destruction. :-X

I am so excited. My two granddaughters, both two years old will be here tomorrow night! Oh the plans I have for these two babies~
I have a little Christmas tree, about 4' high with only multi-colored lights on it. I am going to ask Delia and Maegan for help in decorating it. I have a box of ornaments that were made by their mothers when they were my babies, you know, the clothespin reindeer, the hand print on a can lid, those things. We are also going to color and cut out ornaments from construction paper to hang, create construction paper chains to hang on the tree. I've bought "silly socks" for both, coloring books, videos of the newest Tinkerbell movie, and a karaoke set complete with microphone, that their parents will hate me for. I haven't had this much fun in years! Did I say I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!! Sandy |
