Title: Christmas is still alive
Post by BarbaraD on Dec 18th, 2010 at 6:57am
Yesterday, I attended a grade school "program" in Caleb's school (Linden - pop about 2000).

It was totally awesome... The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders did the program of the Christmas Story (read from the Bible and everything in PUBLIC SCHOOL) in Song...

It takes a lot to "impress" this old Granny (and of course she went cause her "baby" was in the program - ho hum and all that). But I sat thru the hour long program with my mouth open.

One kid would read a passage and then the choir would sing the appropriate song "While Shepherd's Watched" and the shepherds would come out (the costumes were really something) and so on. The angels were "hams", but beautiful.

After the program, there was hugging and wishing "Merry Christmas" to and from everyone. The kids were all hugging the "Principal" and wishing HER a Merry Christmas (that lady is something else).

My Christmas spirit went up about four notches... And the neat thing, Caleb told me all about the story of Christmas (the Bible version) at lunch.

Still sitting in amazement.... BD :-*

That is amazing!  Glad to hear there is at least one teacher and one school not afraid of being taken to court over it.  Teachers here are told no Bible anything, and no hugging students etc.  it is terrible tragedy that is happening in our  country and most of us just sit by and let our religious rights be stripped away.  ok off my soap box now.

Those are memories to be cherished.  That reminds me of all the live nativity scenes my boys were in dressed as shepherds and the Christmas programs at church.  One memory will stay with me forever and that is when my oldest, now 21, was in his 2nd grade school Christmas play.  He was dressed as a silly chicken or something of that sort and they sang throughout.  The end of the program all the children were on the stage singing Silent Night.  As I camcordered that, the only parent with tears streaming down my face, a close-up of this precious child and this moment, I knew I was capturing a moment that I would cherish forever.  Every few years at Christmas we watch it and it still makes me cry.  Those moments are what I live for.  Ok now I need a kleenex.

When I was in 6th grade public shcool here in Jamestown, NY, once a week we went to another classroom for bible stories, mostly old testament stuff of course but fun for 11 year olds. I got more "religion" in grade school than elsewhere.

Oh and all the classrooms had Christmas trees all lit up -- I'm so glad Caleb is going to school up here now.. It's so different from where he was before.

And yes, here in East Texas we still keep Christ in Christmas... I think the theory in the school is -- If ya don't like the songs - don't sing.. and if ya don't do Christmas - stay home! We've been doin' this a long time and we ain't gonna change..  :-*

That sounds amazing. :)

Back in here, almost every Christmas some media will ask if the traditional Christmas party at schools should be ditched for some neutral one, although the majority of Finns are still Lutheran and the Christmas party includes only some songs and/or maybe a play with a bit religious theme. When I was a kid nobody would even suggest something like that.

I'm all for multicultural aspects and learning new things and all that, but how come that should mean that all the old traditions (that the most of us in here still value) should be thrown away just in case that would offend someone? Especially, because every school does provide other things to do for those who are not Lutheran...

I need to find some of that Christmas spirit.   Thanks Barbara and Brian for sharing.
