Title: christmas favourites Post by mightymeated on Dec 19th, 2010 at 10:01am
hi all: first of all merry xmas to all.
as its nearly xmas i think we should all get in to the spirit of the season and share our 3 fav things such as fav xmas film/fav xmas song / and fav present you ever had. i'll start heres mine film: the snowman by Raymond Briggs this is something i have watched every year since i was about 5 years old and it wouldn't be xmas without it. song: this is a tough one as there are so many but if i had to chose just one then it would have to be: carol of the bells. this makes it feel like xmas for me every time i here it. fav present has to be a sunburst electro acoustic guitar from my girlfriend. classic present for someone like me. loved it ;D so then lets here yours :) |

No, you're not. Grinching is always easier than celebrating. And...in point of fact...Christmas has fallen on hard times. Not to worry, though. Christmas was nearly banned in England when Dickens wrote The Christmas Carol, reminding the world there is at least one time of year which ought to be year round. Keeping Christmas in your heart means keeping the reason for the season first and foremost in your life.
My three favorites: the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Throw Jacob Marley in there as an example of what not to be, as well. God bless, and Merry Christmas! (WARNING: this message may cause grinches to invade Whoville to steal the Roast Beast) |

merry xmas back to you... i think your right about this msg bringing out the grinches. it seems to me that some people would rather join the post to have an argument rather than joining in on the festive topic :)

For me, it's always good to get to know someone first before I become close. mightymeated, since you began posting, you seem to have a lot of expectations on how the rest of the folks here should react. Might want to think about that for awhile. |

Now, now children, Christmas is just around the corner, be nice! ;)
Christmas is going to be a white one, thanks to all-time snow record, my presents have been bought and I'm baking treats for Christmas Eve every day while listening to Christmas songs, so sorry, Christmas spirit has arrived to my house. I am a Christmas person, so making a decision between favorite songs is nearly impossible, but I'll try... And I do love several Finnish Christmas songs, but this time I left them out, because you guys have never heard them. :) Film: White Christmas Song: Oh Holy Night/Silent Night/White Christmas Present:PF Christmas Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all! :) Sanna |

Not to pick nits, or to use a favorite phrase in New England, not for nothin', whatever the current understading of Xmas is, the origin of the X is not x as in xylophone; but rather the Greek "chi" or Ch; often accompanied by a small hook at the end of the right hand bar of the "chi" turning that into the Greek letter "rho" or r. It's a first century abbreviation for the first three letters of "Christus" (ChR) or Christ. Hence, Chr(ist)-mas(s). Its use was once, at least, venerable and holy. Now...it probably is an attempt to "demythologize" Christmas so I don't use it at all. TMI? God bless, and Merry Christmas! Where would I be without all ya'll? lance |
Title: Re: christmas favourites Post by Brew on Dec 21st, 2010 at 8:25am
Or it could be a simple abbreviation - one letter to type as opposed to 6.

Favorite Song...Casting Crown's remake of "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day." If you have a second, view the You Tube Video live performance, if the Childrens Choir doesn't make you tear up you're dead inside! If you're really bored, google the original poem, it's origin will break your heart.
Favorite Movie...hands down..."you'll shoot your eye out!"....I LOVE the christmas story marathons... Favorite Present: A Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock, and this thing which tells time". Poetry. Sheer poetry...DUH!!!! Joe |

I remember a few years ago watching Christmas Story with 2 of my granddaughters.
A week later one of them, Emilee who was 5 was at the time was at Walmart with her mom when she ran across a Red Ryder lever action 200 shot BB gun. She screamed out that that was the one in the Christmas story and wanted to buy it for me. Her mom bought it for her and she gave it to me for Christmas. I have it proudly displayed in my gun cabinet with all my other guns. Precious memories. :) |

For anyone who even knows me a little, I would hope that you know I am a Christian. I am very thankful for the reason that we celebrate this holiday. What I am not thankful for is what it has become.
Before one says that "grinching is easier than celebrating" it might be wise to realise that not everyone is in the same situation. One has no idea what may have happened to a person in the past that would cause them to not love this time of year. Well, even I, with my too small heart and my Scrooge attitude, have a few Christmas favorites: Movie: A Christmas Story Song: O Holy Night Gift: Seeing the look on my son's face ( when he was little ) when Santa brought him something that he thought he wasn't getting but REALLY wanted. Um.... I sure wish I knew your real name as I have to say, I feel a bit strange calling you " Mightymeated."
Anyway, there is a code of expected behavior on this site. Telling us to "blow you" might get you locked. Just FYI. Jeannie |

Can we call this fight a draw on all 3 judges cards, and go back to Christmas favorites??
It has always been and always will be my favorite time of the year. My wife has had to put me on Christmas Music probation, I can't break the Christmas music out until the day AFTER Thanksgiving, it just kills me! ;D Joe |
Title: Re: christmas favourites Post by mightymeated on Dec 21st, 2010 at 12:07pm

I agree Joe....that remark was just "a little breach of etiquette by jumping to the triple dog dare ya" lol Anway, have we forgotten about the "head rubbing" caper of a few weeks ago? Some risque' talk there too, and yes I was a willing participant, and yes it was a different type of context but...let's just forgetaboutit and move on..
1.) Fave movie..starts Thanksgiving night with Christmas Vacation and we watch it a least 15 more times until Christmas, then the week of Christmas it's a Christmas Story. (Also have to watch all the Home Alone's too) 2.) Fave songs...Oh Holy Night, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, and any songs my kids sang when they were little in Christmas plays. 3.) Gift..getting engaged Christmas Eve 1982, and watching my kids EVERY Christmas when they saw what Santa brought. Merry Christmas! |

Only I didn't say "Fudge." I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the "F-dash-dash-dash" word!
God I loved Ralphie! ;D Joe |

It is sung by Mary, the mother of Jesus: I have traveled many moonless nights, Cold and weary with a babe inside, And I wonder what I've done. Holy father you have come, And chosen me now to carry your son. I am waiting in a silent prayer. I am frightened by the load I bear. In a world as cold as stone, Must I walk this path alone? Be with me now. Be with me now. Breath of heaven, Hold me together, Be forever near me, Breath of heaven. Breath of heaven, Lighten my darkness, Pour over me your holiness, For you are holy. Breath of heaven. Do you wonder as you watch my face, If a wiser one should have had my place, But I offer all I am For the mercy of your plan. Help me be strong. Help me be. Help me. "Nester the Christmas Donkey" is a close second to "A Christmas Story".
