As a clusterhead I've been experimenting with different approaches to the pain from the very beginning - which I believe is pretty normal for most of us :) Over the time I have developed a few methods that have a certain effect of lowering pain a few KIP points down for me, though most of them are unfortunately not very consistent. The method I'm describing here however has been effective in both making the pain more bearable and the attacks shorter, and has been working every time so far for me.

Since I don't think it would be efficient to do this with a partner (not to mention stress and other things), the approach is to masturbate while breathing oxygen. The general idea for men is to either:

     1. Keep arousal as high as possible (bordering on orgasm) without ejaculation, or
     2. Allow ejaculation, but continue to masturbate (usually possible using a masturbator sleeve).
     
Which method is better is up to the individual.
I obviously don't know how this works for women, but if it does, it may be easier given that most can have an orgasm multiple times in a row.

I'd usually combine this approach with hyperventilation (as hyperventilation is more effective, but can be painful and tiring), but it's faring well on its own as well.

I'm pretty sure it might be too bizarre for some people to even think about this, let alone try it, but the very nature of our condition is such that I'd be happy if the method brought some additional relief to even one other person; so I can't really keep it to myself. Hope someone finds this useful.

Next time hubby is in cycle, I will ask that he try this experiment in the name of science.  I will need to be present to document the results of course  ;)

I'm lucky, 02 on it's own is an almost fail safe abort for me. Given all of the arterial work involved in sex, it doesn't suprise me that some of the mechanisms involved would prove beneficial for controlling a CH attack. Kudo's to you for posting this, if it works for you, it'll undoubtedly work for others. ;)

Some time ago I read Doug's post about effectiveness of hyperventilation and decided to give it a try. The method I tried first was the following: 1. Exhale as much air as possible (using methods described by Doug) 2. Inhale as much oxygen as possible. This proved to be more effective than the usual 'ordinary' breathing, however it still required quite a few exchange cycles before getting into the hyperventilation state. Because of that I've modified the method a bit: 1. Exhale as much air as possible. 2. Inhale as much oxygen as possible AND push the oxygen release button on the demand valve. Do it as long as you can - your lungs will expand, then your cheeks at which point you're at your maximum capacity. 3. Contract your abdomen trying to push as much oxygen as possible to your head. Make sure you don't fall down (because of the hyperventilation and the resulting dizziness). I also try to keep my eyes open as otherwise my eyeballs tend to roll up which puts some unnecessary strain on them. 4. Keep the oxygen in your lungs for a few seconds. Using this method I found that I could hyperventilate immediately and with every oxygen exchange, which significantly reduces the time needed to abort. This method however can be a bit unpleasant (painful) because of the amount of pressure the oxygen is exerting on the lungs. I'd say it's worth it given the results. I was wondering if anybody else used the demand valve like that and if there were any known medical considerations/long term consequences of it (after all, the pressure comes from the valve, not from the natural breathing).

Yeah, I don't much like pain either. And the only turn on for me is when the hits abort and a love of life without pain floods my soul.  8-)

I was wondering that myself Sandy.  I think this calls for some research.  Altough I've never been there.. I believe there's one of those adult toy stores 53.8 miles from my home that's open Mon - Sat, 12:00 noon - 2:30 a.m. (closed all major holidays) and takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover (but not American Express), and offers free popcorn with any 5 movie rentals...not that I've ever been there   ;)

Yeah, it's true it might be harder to achieve arousal - it is for me anyway. As for hands, holding my head doesn't really give me a lot of relief, so that hand is free.

Really the idea behind part of the technique is very similar to Charlie's blood flow redirection excercise.  It's not really a "sex" thing, more of a blood flow thing, plus the endophine release could possibly be beneficial.

From what I experience it feels like it's more about the endorphin shot than the blood flow (although they probably both count), but that's just my guess.

Of course it would be ridiculous to think you could try this method at that pain level.  I am fortunate enough to not have had a 9 or 10 since I got off of imitrex.

I don't see anywhere in the post where a certain pain level was mentioned.  Therefore, assumed that it could be tried at any pain level.  Hence my post.  Certainly wouldn't work for us, but as mentioned, glad it works for others.

Well, one thing is if it's effective at KIP 10, but the other one is if you're able to do it despite the pain. I believe the method to be effective at KIP 10 if the person can manage it with such amount of pain (which can be hard). It can also be introduced after the oxygen starts to work and reduces the pain to a manageable level.

Glad it works for you, Akage, but I reckon if it were to work for everybody there's some blokes here would have been cured long ago.

Obviously, as with any method :) I haven't heard anybody mixing this with oxygen breathing before, so I'm sharing.

I think if I tried this method at 10, I'd be missing something after it was over...........

The Shaggy has killed many a shadow or low kip'er with a little "self help".  No jack pack/sleeve for me, that would be the next level I guess. 

People should note that hyperventilation is different than asphyxiation.  So everyone into being choked by their partner should adjust their technique accordingly, no plastic bags etc. (was that my out loud voice? :D).

ive had the same thing happen to me. during a cycle i cannot have sex for fear of a nasty hit after. ive got to go 3-4 months with no sex. many girlfriends cant understand this so our relationship goes south fast. SUUUCKS!!

Interesting thing is, I've recently been breathing with the mask on my face without actually releasing oxygen (which means basically that I'm getting *less* oxygen than while breathing normally), and it sometimes actually helps more than oxygen! It's like the brain reaction is muffled by the lack of oxygen. Once I take a gulp of oxygen the pain might get back stronger.

In that case (hypothetically speaking :) ) I either use my imagination or run a vid on a laptop - I'd say the vid works better because you don't need to think or imagine (which is obviously hard during an attack) - you just react to the imagery. For me the effect actually surpasses the problem of the screen flicker which I'm sensitive to during attacks.

The reason I asked was because I thought if you were Japanese...you would be of Shinto Faith and that would give you the, how can I say, the mental attitude/strength to be able to consider sex during a CH!
I don't even like being with myself during an attack!
I have embraced 'Bushido' as my guide to life,many years ago, and it is helping me a great deal to
get through the personal problem I am having at this time....
