Title: Difference in masks
Post by lsarver3808 on Jan 6th, 2011 at 8:24am
Since we are new to the oxygen scene, I was wondering if someone could explain the differences in the masks.  We have the non rebreather that the company who is furnishing the oxygen supplied for us.  It is what the would use at the hospital. Disposable.  What is the difference with this other mask being sold?  How long will it last and does it make much of a different impact when using oxygen?

Thanks in advance,

Lori

I have 3 O2ptimasks - home, car, and office - the oldest of which is 3 years old. I've never had to replace any of them.

The key is the bigger bag. At flow rates of 25 lpm or more, the 3-liter bag on the O2ptimask allows for true hyperventilation.

For less than $30, you can't go wrong. Get one. Now.

Difference in the mask part itself is better too; forms a tighter seal and is more comfortable. As well as just the all around construction- the optimask is just better made. My husband used both the $2 disposable and the Optimask this last cycle- he liked the Optimask much more.

Yeah, I forgot the comfort part - mostly because I use the mouthpiece instead of the facemask.

Between the larger bag that I can still suck flat at 25 lpm, but is a lifesaver when I get it settled down to just a good hyperventilation and the MUCH more comfortable form fitting mask I'll suck the O2 out of the tube before going back to the old mask.  I always felt like I was suffocating with it and it was not good to be around when the bag broke and I had to try to find another mask and get it hooked up with a K8 going on.
