Title: Serotonin Syndrome (first post!) Post by Luke_Happe on Jan 18th, 2011 at 2:09pm
Sorry if this has been covered .. tried searching and didnt find quite what I was looking for.
Anyway .. episodic CH sufferer for about 10 years ... up until my last cycle I have had relief from imitrex injections as well as maxalt .. I am making a appointment to talk to a neruologist about trying oxygen after reading over this board. My questions is this ... For the past probably 5 years i have been on zoloft (tried weaning off a few times with little success) and not until recently has anyone brought to my attention the risk of Serotonin Syndrome when taking an SSRI and imitrex. From what i've read about this sydrome it sure sounds like something i dont want to mess around with. Anyone have any info/opinion on this? I'm hoping oxygen will take the place of these medications, however until i can get in to see someone (usually doesnt happen until the cycle is all but over) I need some relief .. Thanks in advance, and thanks for such a great site! PS .. any recommendations of a good neurologist in the pittsburgh, pa area would be greatly appreciated. Luke |

Wow ... Thanks Bob! Especially that article ... Honestly the thought of trying to get through a cycle without the triptans scared the crap out of me ... That article will definatly make me watch closely for symptoms, but makes it sound much less of a concern then i originally thought ...
I'll check out those links as well ... |

Hey Luke,
Don't be afraid of trying Oxygen. I barely use Imitrex for attacks after making the switch. The only time I do is when I can't get to my O2 or if I can't dislodge one. Now that I've been using high flow (>25lpm) I havent' used any Imitrex ;) -Dennis- |

While serotonin syndrome is a possibility, I wouldn't worry about it unless you were taking an anti-depressant, a 5HTP supplement, melatonin AND using a triptan. But if you are using all of those, then I would definitely be on alert.

Thanks for all the replies (and PM's) I feel like I have a better base knowledge going into this cycle then ever before which definatly makes me feel better about anticipating the next 6-8 weeks of hell.
