Title: Is there a pattern to CH
Post by crosspescara on Jan 25th, 2011 at 4:27am
Its struck me as odd that in my area 3 long remission ch sufferers have all had new bouts of ch at the same time. Has anybody ever done any stats to see if "outbreaks" occur. Was thinking that members could log start and end dates and see if patterns emerge.

Heard one uproven theory that there could be some form of viral cause

Hi Garry,
Is there anyway do you think that members could enter their dates here, on-line?
Then the stats would be accessible and easily monitored/collated, rather than individually monitored by them...
Just a thought
Regards
Gary

Hi gary,
Thats what I was thinking of. Could map occurance against location and date, obvouisly keeping names etc confidential

When I was episodic, seasons seemed to rule the day. I would always get hit in the summer months. Then, after 10 years or so, they switched and winters were king. Then I went chronic...inevitable I guess...so the pattern is all the time!  My guess is there is no "block party" here where everyone gets hit at once but instead a rhythm peculiar to the inividual's cycle. Blessings. lance

When I first started getting my headaches, it was in the Spring/Fall time. It was when there was a weather change; I have read that many times they occur on daylight savings time. Mine have slowly been moving and I didn’t get any headaches this year until the New Year. It got really cold where I live but I’m not sure if that has to do with anything. My cycle is ending I believe, I usually get my headaches at 1-2 am like clockwork but I haven’t had one in 5 days. I am still gettings shadows but not as bad as before but, it does make me a bit nervous because I really hate waking up in the middle of the night with a sledge hammer being beat against the left side of my head. But I have noticed that I have been extremely tired the past few mornings now that my cycle is ending, is that weird or what?

It's pretty much a year round start and end to cycles around here. Just my observations, but year round, people post the beast is starting, peaking, leaving and gone. Some members are affected by weather, some not, some follow the daylight savings time, some don't. It's the one constant in the beast, his total unpredictability! :)

From long ago I have a B.S. in Psych with an emphasis in research, physiology and statistics and I'm still in touch with one of my stats profs.  Just for fun (yeah right!) I started (and I mean JUST started... yesterday) looking at the state by state listing of number of CH sufferers on this site and putting that against total state population.  In thinking about it, it really starts to boggle the mind trying to imagine all the variables... does amount of daylight have an effect? (I feel better with more sun but others have posted that sun is a trigger. People in sunny areas - do they go out and have more sun exposure or, like a friend of mine in Florida, stay in all day because it's so bloody hot?).  Episodic is one issue, chronic is all together another where correlations to seasonal onset don't apply.

I guess the way to start this would be to develop a spreadsheet of different variables members could post to on this site.

I know a lot of these are already on the survey on this site but what would be some more headings to explore?  Anyone please jump in and add to this (for example, I had no idea that blue and brown eyed persons are more likely to have CHs).

1)Time of year of onset,
2)time of year of remission,
3)number of hits per cycle,
4)location of individual by state and
5)maybe even by region within the state (e.g. some areas of Ohio have a longer growing season than others and therefore seasonal differences would be more subject)
6)sex of individual
7)age of individual
8)age of individual at time of first onset
9)smoker
10)drinker
11)occupation
12)length of time at occupation
13)number of hits per day
14)what time of day do the hits come
14a)how long do the hits last
15)height/weight of individual
16)amount of time spent exercising during the week
17)income level
18)education
19)family history of CH
Opening more cans of worms:
20)Method(s) of aborting
21)Method(s) of preventing
22)Nutritional supplement(s) taken that help
23)Diet
24)known triggers
25)symptoms indicating the onset of a CH
26)symptoms indicating the onset of a cycle of CHs
27)medical history of accidents, illnesses, operations, orthodontics, vision...
28)ethnic background
29)eye color/ hair color

Ah heck, after I've looked this over I'm wondering if I'm even being realistic???  Well, I'll post it anyway and see what kind of feedback comes.

Seems like for years Joe would start a cycle right in High Holiday time - Thanksgiving/Christmas....and then again in the spring. We did sort of feel it aligned with the time changes, although it morfed over time. now he seems to get longer remissions and longer cycles.

I've had CH since I was ten. They were all over the place then but worst in the Spring and sometimes Fall.   They disappeared when I was 18 or 19 then came back in my twenties.

I rarely feel clear headed. I can almost always feel it lurking even when I'm not getting hit regularly.  Sometimes all day shadows knock me on my butt, especially if  they don't let up for a few days.

PF wishes,

Jeannie
