Title: o2 regulators
Post by sox on Feb 17th, 2011 at 7:55am
Hi Guys,

Its been a while. Pain free since Dec 25th (was a pain that i wasn't able to drink any bubbly over xmas, but i soon got over it for the new year!)

anyway, finally got an appointment to see a neurologist at the local hospital.

(anyone from this side of the pond, UK, has any experience with Dr. J. Sussman? He seemed very nice and on the ball.)
Hes writing to my GP so that I can get O2 (cant wait!!) and vemapril next time i get a bout.

He mention that in the uk it is not possible to get a high flow rate regulator on the NHS and i could contact BOC medical gasses who would be able to get me the right equipment.

Does anyone know which is the correct regulator and other things I need from their expansive online catalogue?

thanks and hoping you pain free,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Check out the link on the accordian menu on the left: "oxygen info" in yellow.  It'll tell you all you really need to know to understand O2 delivery, including flow rates and regulators.
Many people buy the regulators cheap from eBay or other online vendors (30-40$ cdn) because of the higher flow rates available (15L/min or higher).  If you contact your supplier and mention the rate of flow required, they should be able to direct you to a proper regulator.  All these things are publicly available, and fairly cheap if you were to buy your own.

Hope it helps

Shoot for a regulator that goes as high as 25lpm, or if you can afford one, a demand flow regulator. It eliminates the need for a bag and most can fit either a large tank or a smaller E tank. Best of luck and blessings! lance

Hi Tom,

I found this here START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE
This info comes via here via Ouch from someone who has used this
Company (he said they were very helpful)...
I asked Batch who is our O2 Guru here, and he said it was a good buy...

I am trying to go down the 'self-help' route using O2 as I, personally, dont stand
a snow flake in hell's chance of my GP signing for the goods...

Am now trying to see what the cost of a welding tank (large) would be to rent/lease whatever.
But cannot give it my full attention at the moment as I need to undercoat my Jack Russell...
(you dont want to hear what is really happening!)  ;D

We need to pool the info for the few UK CH'ers here, so can you please share yours with us?

eg Cylinder sizes & info here START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

Cheers

Hi Marc,

That's 2 of us then Ha Ha!
Have used O2 and Acetylene for welding and burning but have never needed to change a tank!

I am assuming this fitting screws into the tank (the one on the bottom)?
Your American terminology for thread ID bears no resemblance to our UK pipe thread ie 1/2 inch BSP.
etc....

Back at ya

thanks guys,

Hopefully the letter the neuro is sending to my doc will arrive in the next week or so and then ill go pay my gp a visit and get stuff put in place. Will let you know how that turns out.

Out of interest having never undercoated a Jack Russel, What does it involve?  :)

I did a little checking with BOC.  The following link should give you a starting point in the quest for home oxygen therapy for CH there in the UK. Most of these high capacity oxygen systems have the 0-15 liter/minute oxygen regulator integrated with each oxygen cylinder used in home oxygen therapy.

I'm sure if you call the folks at BOC and ask for their high capacity oxygen cylinder division, you'll find someone who knows how to take care of CH'ers.

Their website only show regulators with max flow rates up to 15 liters/minute so you'll need another source for regulators with higher flow rates.

If you're still shopping around for a medical oxygen regulator, the standard medical oxygen cylinder fitting is BS No. 3.

I've been using the Flotec Inc. InGage™ series 0-60 liter/minute oxygen regulators for over five years.  They build these oxygen regulators to order and their spec sheet shows the UK BS No. 3 fitting as an option.  Their website is located at:

You can email them at: info@floteco2.com

If you want to go for the Rolex of oxygen therapy systems...  there's the Carnét Oxygen Demand Valve at the following link.  Give them a call to find out what type of fittings your regulator needs to support a demand valve.

There's no flow rate to worry about with an oxygen demand valve.  You control dosage with respiration rate and tidal volume and the Carnét Oxygen Demand Valve is rated at a peak flow rate of 200 liters/minute and a sustained flow rate of 60 liters/minute.

Hope this helps,

Take care,

V/R, Batch
