Title: welding shop o2?
Post by suresh on Feb 18th, 2011 at 9:17pm
I have been reading about the benefits of oxygen. as mentioned in my first post an oxygen setup from a medical supplier is pretty expensive. can i use a welding shop setup(tank and valve) with the suitable medical accessories such as the masks?

Absolutely. Many people on the board use it. It comes out of the same tanks as the medical 02. If Welding 02 is not pure, their welds fail, this pisses off welders! ;D So yes, the oxygen from welding tanks is pure.

Hopefully this will answer any questions. The keys to oxygen:

Get on it as soon as you feel the attack start. A delay of even a few minutes can really extend the abort time.

Your lungs must get 100% oxygen, no outside air, no exhaled air. This is best accomplished using a non re breather mask and a high flow regulator , at least 15 LPM, preferably upwards of 25 LPM.

My abort times with oxygen run about 6-8 minutes. Hoping it works as well for you.

Joe

Yup and yup- my husband uses welding O2 without a problem. If you use a welding regulator (like my husband uses)  be aware that there is an adapter that will screw on to the "outflow" connection so you can use the push on hose from the mask. Easy peezy- words cannot express how happy we were to have gone this route.

Good luck to you!

is this breakdown of welding oxygen ok?

Oxygen ......................................................... > 99.5%
Nitrogen .......................................................... less than 0.0500% (< 500 PPM)
Argon .......................................................... less than 0.4000% (< 4000 PPM)
Carbon Monoxide ............................................ less than 0.00005% (< 0.5 PPM)
Total Hydrocarbons ......................................... less than 0.0040% (< 40 PPM)
Water .......................................................... less than 0.0008% (< 8 PPM)
Dew Point ........................................................ -80 degrees F

Yes.  The air in Washington DC is far worse...

Do you have a hand truck for a 70lb 150 cu ft size cylinder or are you getting two of the smaller 80 cu ft cylinders?

Have you selected a good 0-25 liter/minute oxygen regulator with a CGA-540 fitting to match the welder's oxygen cylinder valve?

How about the $27.50 O2PTIMASK™ kit from the CH.com store at the left?

Take care,

V/R, Batch

I've read it's cheaper and better to rent, and the smallest size they have for rental is 141 cu. ft. (We can find a little dolly or luggage cart to get it around..) I'll be looking through posts again to find a regulator in a bit, and I'll go ahead and order the O2PTIMASK™

How do I figure out if a welding oxygen regulator will provide a high enough flow rate? They all seem to go by psi. Here's one that will put out 200 psi:

Is this going to get me 15 lpm or more? Also, do some of the welding regulators have a control to vary the flow rate?

Hi Brent

Go to ebay and search for medical oxygen regulators . . . you will find regulators under $30 for regular medical "E" tanks, AND you will find medical regulators that fit welding tanks which will specify a 640 fitting (if my memory is correct) and they should read in "lpms" . . . then order one of the masks with the 3-litre bag.

I've been gone a while, but am sure Joe, Batch, and others will correct if I got the fitting #incorrect.

02 is wonderful . . . it and this board saved my life.

    Be Safe,   PFDANs

Does this one have an outlet for the O2ptimask?

The outlet looks different, which is annoying because it looks so similar to this one, which has the right outlet:

Other than that one, all the regulators I find with cga540 connections are really expensive, and the main problem is they don't say what the flow rates they provide are in LPM. This is incredibly frustrating.

Brent, the 1st regulator has a DISS fitting, that's for a Demand Valve, so no the OPTImask won't fit.

The 2nd regulator is a 870cga and fits medical tanks, E & smaller, not welding. I know it seems complicated but you'll get there.

Hopefully Marc, one of our experts on this, will see this post. In the meantime I took a link from one of his posts that may help you.

Yeah, I actually have one of the regulators for E tanks, as I used to have E tanks. Now that I bought a welding tank, because it sounds like a lot of people on here and clusterbusters use welding tanks, I can't find a regulator.

How is it that there's not a page on one of the cluster headaches websites that has what 15 LPM converts to in psi?

I've never worried about lpm. As long as the bag stays full yer good to go.

I'm just another one to answer your original question with a resounding YES!    I have both & the only difference is that I didn't need a script for the welders.
